Breitbart News reported that seven senior sources from the Biden campaign, the White House, and the DNC have indicated that Harris is the top choice to replace Biden, highlighting internal frustrations within the Biden campaign.
The leak to Reuters underscores dissatisfaction following Biden’s poor debate performance and increasing calls for him to step down. This revelation marks the fourth damaging leak about Biden within two days, adding to the already tense atmosphere within his campaign.
Previous leaks have included details about Biden’s nap schedule during debate prep, staffers’ fear of his anger flashes, and former President Barack Obama's concerns regarding Biden's political viability.
The White House has denied the accuracy of some of these leaks, particularly those concerning Biden’s nap schedule and anger flashes. Despite these denials, the latest leak points to a growing sentiment that Harris could be a more viable candidate.
Harris is considered the top alternative largely because Biden’s donations could be easily transferred to her, she has significant name recognition, and she polls better against former President Donald Trump, according to a recent CNN poll.
However, Harris faces considerable challenges. Her approval rating stands at a low 39%, which is below the historical 50% threshold needed for incumbents to win reelection. Additionally, she has been criticized for her performance as the border czar, failing to secure the southern border effectively.
Political experts suggest that replacing Biden could be fraught with difficulties, including the logistical challenge of placing a new candidate on ballots in all 50 states and reallocating campaign funds. Moreover, finding a candidate willing to potentially be a sacrificial lamb in Biden’s place is another significant hurdle.
Donna Brazile, the former interim chair of the DNC, emphasized the current state of the Biden-Harris ticket, stating that Biden remains the nominee and is not stepping down. Michael Trujillo, a former Hillary Clinton strategist, supported Harris, noting the improbability of winning the nomination over the vice president.
Brazile’s comments underscore the procedural aspects of the Democratic ticket. She pointed out that despite the leaks and internal frustrations, the official Democratic ticket remains Biden-Harris.
Trujillo also highlighted Harris's strength within the party, pointing out that delegates are Biden’s and Harris’s, giving her solid backing across the nation.
“People may have dreams of another superhero, but there is a process, and the last time I checked, it’s a Biden-Harris ticket. She’s number two on the ticket,” Brazile stated, reinforcing the current status of the Democratic race.
