As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office and examine possibilities for resuming construction, Cotton is urging for all related records to be maintained, Fox News reported.
Senator Tom Cotton, a prominent Republican figure, sent a detailed communication to the Secretary of the Department of Defense (DOD), Lloyd Austin. He explicitly requested the preservation of all records about the sales of materials originally intended for the southwestern border wall.
Officials have reportedly sold off these materials at minimal prices since construction ceased under President Joe Biden's administration.
President Biden halted the controversial border wall project, fervently pursued during Donald Trump’s first term, soon after taking office. Subsequently, officials have disposed of numerous segments of the border wall, and Fox News has highlighted that these sections have fetched minimal costs on the market.
According to a Department of Defense official, the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act sanctioned this disposal. Noteworthy is that around sixty percent of these materials ended up with U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Texas and California for various uses. The remaining portions were acquired by GOVPLANET, an outlet dealing in surplus government resources.
These transactions led to the government relinquishing ownership, leaving the DOD without the authority to interfere in subsequent sales. Senator Tom Cotton, in his letter, underscored the necessity for a detailed report on these transactions from Secretary Lloyd Austin.
