Search continues for four U.S. soldiers missing during training exercise in Lithuania

 March 26, 2025

A rigorous search is underway in Lithuania for four U.S. Army soldiers who are currently unaccounted for following a training exercise mishap.

According to Fox News, the soldiers disappeared after their military vehicle was found submerged in a body of water during routine training operations.

The missing personnel, members of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division based at Fort Stewart, Georgia, were conducting tactical exercises near Pabradė, a location just short of 6 miles from the Belarus border. The incident involved their M88 Hercules armored recovery vehicle, which notably sank under undisclosed circumstances.

NATO and local authorities rally in search efforts

The efforts to locate the missing soldiers involve a collaboration between the U.S. Army, Lithuanian Armed Forces, and other local authorities. These teams are intensively searching the area where the accident occurred, utilizing diverse resources to hope for a positive outcome.

U.S. officials have confirmed this incident as a training accident, although they have not released specifics surrounding the cause of the vehicle sinking. Officials expect to provide updates as the search progresses and they obtain more information.

U.S. and Lithuanian military cooperation emphasized

Amidst this tense situation, leaders have highlighted endorsements of international military cooperation. Lt. Gen. Charles Costanza, the V Corps commanding general, expressed his gratitude towards the Lithuanian troops and first responders:

I would like to personally thank the Lithuanian Armed Forces and first responders who quickly came to our aid in our search operations. It’s this kind of teamwork and support that exemplifies the importance of our partnership and our humanity regardless of what flags we wear on our shoulders.

The NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte responded to the incident noting, "This is still early news so we do not know the details," underscoring the preliminary status of the information available. He also mentioned, "This is really terrible news and our thoughts are with the families and loved ones."

Persistent unease among military families

The 3rd Infantry Division has been actively keeping the soldiers’ families informed, amid a backdrop of anxiety and hope. They shared on their Facebook page: "Our thoughts and prayers are with our Raider Brigade Soldiers and Families during the search for our four missing Dogface Soldiers in Lithuania."

An anonymous U.S. official quoted by The Associated Press abstained from commenting on the status of the soldiers, reflecting the highly sensitive nature of ongoing operations.

Significance of the U.S.-Lithuania military collaboration

Such emergency scenarios spotlight the enduring partnership between U.S. and Lithuanian forces, emphasizing the strategic and humanitarian bonds that extend beyond mere tactical exercises.

This mutual effort underlines the broader implications of such military collaborations, particularly in regions close to geopolitical tensions.

While the immediate concern remains the safe recovery of the missing soldiers, the broader narrative encapsulates the inherent risks involved in international military training and preparedness exercises.

The search continues for the four soldiers, amidst hope and heavy hearts. As multilateral efforts persist, the incident underscores the inherent uncertainties and dangers of military training, while also highlighting resilient international support systems. All involved parties remain hopeful for a resolution that brings the soldiers home safely.
