Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez Launch Anti-Oligarchy Tour

 March 21, 2025

Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez initiated a tour highlighting concerns over billionaire influence in U.S. politics.

The "Fighting Oligarchy" tour targets the impact of billionaire contributions, particularly Elon Musk's involvement with President Donald Trump's administration, Fox News reported.

The tour spans key states such as Nevada, Arizona, and Colorado. Both Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez focus on engaging the public regarding big money's role in politics and the reshaping of governmental structures. They have critiqued the Democratic Party's low favorability and the dominance of financial interests within both major political groups.

Sanders Criticizes Musk's Influence

One of Sanders' main targets is Elon Musk, who is accused of contributing significantly to President Trump’s campaign. Sanders highlighted Musk’s position overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency, questioning the influence billionaires wield over public policy. Sanders argued that this undermines the democratic process and risks increasingly authoritarian governance.

At a large rally in Tempe, which saw an attendance exceeding 13,000, Sanders pressed these points further. He criticized Trump’s moves to dismantle entities like the Department of Education, noting such changes should go through Congress rather than being dictated by executive order. Ocasio-Cortez echoed these sentiments, calling for increased resistance within the Democratic Party.

Sanders, during an interview, steered clear of direct criticism regarding Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's support of a Republican funding bill. Despite internal tension within the Democratic Party, Sanders chose not to focus on inner-party disputes during the event.

The Public's Growing Discontent

In response to the current political climate, Sanders conveyed the public's growing dissatisfaction. He warned against complacency as billionaires gain more control over governmental functions. Emphasizing the need for alternatives, Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez argued for a fundamental shift away from political systems excessively characterized by wealth-driven influence.

Sanders declared, “The American people are sick and tired of a government now run by billionaires. We have the richest guy in the world going around, cutting the Veterans Administration, threatening the existence of Social Security while Republicans work on a tax bill that will give a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the richest 1% and cut Medicaid and other programs.”

Responses from attendees like Cindy Garman and Pat Robinson expressed dismay at Schumer’s recent decision, with another participant, Amanda Ratloff, stating that Schumer is inadequate for current leadership needs. These voices reflect a broader desire for political figures who actively challenge the status quo.

Calls for Nonviolent Protest

In recent weeks, violent incidents targeting Tesla property have surfaced amid mounting frustrations. Sanders condemned these actions, making a clear distinction between protest rights and prohibited activities. He firmly stated that while citizens have the right to express dissent, engaging in violence is unacceptable under any circumstances.

Ocasio-Cortez stressed the necessity of a revived Democratic Party that vigorously advocates for working-class interests. She articulated the importance of electoral choices that align with values of equality and transparency, challenging both Republicans and fellow Democrats to prioritize public service over financial expedience.

As the "Fighting Oligarchy" tour continues, Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez are actively amplifying their message on financial influence in politics and working to preserve democratic order. With intense discussions on campaign finance and executive authority, they plan to further engage citizens across the nation in the upcoming phases of their journey.

The tour has highlighted key issues of campaign finance reform, the political leverage of wealthy individuals, and internal conflicts within the Democratic Party’s approach to governance.

These discussions represent a critical dialogue for many Americans invested in reshaping the nation’s political landscape amid the current administration's tenure.
