Royal Family Indifferent to Meghan Markle's New Netflix Series: Experts Weigh In

 January 8, 2025

Meghan Markle is stepping back into the spotlight with her new lifestyle series.

According to Fox News, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, is set to launch her Netflix series, "With Love, Meghan," amidst mixed reactions and apparent disinterest from the British royal family.

Meghan Markle's return to social media marks the beginning of a new chapter as she prepares to premiere her lifestyle series on Netflix. She hosts and executive produces the series "With Love, Meghan," which will release on January 15.

Before this, the Duchess played a key role in the legal drama "Suits" and ran a personal lifestyle blog, The Tig. She discontinued the blog in 2017 after getting engaged to Prince Harry.

The Royal Family’s Reaction and Critics’ Views

While Meghan prepares to re-engage with the public, the British royal family responds with a subdued reaction. According to Kinsey Schofield, a royal commentator, there is a notable disinterest from the royal quarters concerning Meghan's new ventures. Schofield states, "I was told that the Prince and Princess of Wales have no interest in Meghan’s future projects."

Given the previous engagements and controversies surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan, including their 2022 docuseries "Harry & Meghan" and a sports docuseries "Polo," which did not meet expectations, skepticism hangs over their current projects. Critics and some insiders deem Meghan's new series as insignificant, with a courtier reportedly assigned to monitor the show for any controversial content.

Despite the commercial potential of their Netflix deal, purportedly valued at around $100 million, the Sussexes' projects have so far failed to resonate strongly with audiences. They took a step towards greater independence and financial security by moving away from royal duties in 2020. However, some observe their efforts in the streaming industry, including the forthcoming lifestyle series filmed in their Montecito home, with a critical eye.

New Series Includes Celebrities and a Potential Cookbook

Meghan's new series promises to be a blend of lifestyle content with celebrity interviews, reflecting her previous interests as shown through her blog. Reports suggest that the duchess might also tie this series to a broader range of lifestyle initiatives, including a possible cookbook.

Among the royal family, King Charles III and Princess Catherine have had a challenging year with health concerns including cancer, from which Catherine has recovered. Prince William has publicly praised the resilience and empathy displayed by his family members throughout these difficulties.

Helena Chard, another royal commentator, highlighted the familial strength during these trying times. She recounts Prince William's words: "He highlighted that we could all do with more empathetic leadership around the world. And the king has demonstrated unwavering leadership even in ill health."

King Charles Hopes for Sussexes' Independence

Despite the underlying tensions, it appears that King Charles harbors hope for the success of Harry and Meghan's ventures. Helena Chard states that Charles wishes for the couple to establish themselves independently, thus not needing to seek financial help from the royal family.

In comparison to historical royal precedents, Schofield explains, "Meghan’s career path aligns much more with Sarah Ferguson’s than any other rogue royal."

As Meghan Markle continues to embark on new professional paths, her role in the royal narrative remains a topic of much discussion and speculation. Her new series represents another attempt to cement her position in the public sphere, albeit amidst challenges and changing public perceptions. With her foray into digital and lifestyle entertainment, Meghan's influence continues to be a matter of significant interest and debate.
