Rising Democratic Star Acknowledges Misstated Military Award

 August 30, 2024

Maryland Governor Wes Moore has admitted to falsely claiming he received the Bronze Star, a significant military honor, according to Fox News.

Moore now finds himself at the center of controversy after the revelation that he claimed the Bronze Star Medal, which his military records do not support. This claim emerged from a FOIA request examining his 2006 White House fellowship application.

During his 2022 gubernatorial campaign, media introduced Moore as a Bronze Star recipient, a statement he did not correct despite knowing it was inaccurate. His staff later argued that Moore never personally made such claims.

Exploring the Discrepancy in Military Awards

Documents revealed that Wes Moore's White House fellowship application stated, "For my work, the 82nd Airborne Division have awarded me the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Action Badge." However, official records verify only the Combat Action Badge, awarded in May 2006, not the Bronze Star.

Moore included the Bronze Star in his application based on advice from his then-commanding officer, Lt. Gen. Michael Fenzel, who believed Moore was eligible for the award and assumed it would be officially approved before the fellowship began.

Lt. Gen. Michael Fenzel, who remained unaware until recently that Moore never received the Bronze Star, significantly contributed to the mix-up, which Moore calls an "honest mistake."

Accountability and Acknowledgment by Governor Moore

Moore described the circumstances during an interview:

"It was an honest mistake to include something because my commanding officer thought it was a good idea. He thought that I earned it, and he was already going through the paperwork to process it," said Maryland Governor Wes Moore, reflecting on advice he received over a decade ago.

Wes Moore took full responsibility for the inaccuracies in his claims during an interview with Fox 5 DC. "I take full accountability," he stated, aiming to clear up any confusion about his military accolades.

The embellishment emerged during the 2022 gubernatorial campaign when media interviews mistakenly identified Moore as a Bronze Star recipient. Despite his staff's defense, the mention in his 2006 fellowship application contradicted these later assertions.

The Fallout and Public Reaction

Maryland residents and veterans have expressed mixed feelings about Moore's misrepresentation, ranging from disappointment to understanding, given his commanding officer's advice. This revelation has sparked a broader discussion about verifying military credentials in public and political spheres.

The event underscores the complexities of representing military service and the importance of thorough verification. It also highlights the significance of military awards in public profiles.

As analysts examine the details, Governor Wes Moore's admission marks a pivotal moment in his career, reflecting on his integrity and response to oversight.

This incident emphasizes the need for accuracy and transparency in public service, especially concerning military honors.
