Tensions momentarily subsided as Russian President Vladimir Putin announced an "Easter truce" with Ukraine.
According to The Hill, Russian troops were ordered to cease fire from Saturday evening until the end of Sunday, a directive from the top Russian leader himself.
Announced during a meeting with Valery Gerasimov, the chief of the general staff of the Russian Armed Forces, the ceasefire was meant to be a humanitarian gesture. President Putin emphasized that all military actions should be paused during this period.
Putin expressed hope that Ukraine would mirror this gesture of goodwill. He also instructed his troops to stay alert for any potential breaches or provocations.
Despite the declared ceasefire, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted ongoing Russian military operations. According to him, Russian drones continued their activity over Ukraine, casting doubt on the truce's sincerity.
President Zelensky detailed that air raid alerts were spreading throughout Ukraine as late as 17:15 on Saturday, with Russian attack drones detected over the country. The Ukrainian air defense and aviation were quickly deployed in response.
President Zelensky accused Putin of compromising the true spirit of Easter and the value of human life. His comments underscored the skepticism surrounding the ceasefire's effectiveness. At 18:00 local time on Saturday, the air alert in Kyiv was lifted, reported by Agence France-Presse. This indicated a temporary halt in the immediate threat, coinciding with the beginning of the ceasefire.
On the same day, a significant exchange of prisoners of war took place between Russia and Ukraine. At least 240 individuals were swapped, indicating some level of cooperation amid the ongoing conflict.
President Zelensky shared the uplifting news of 277 Ukrainian fighters returning from Russian captivity. These included personnel from various military and security services who were involved in key battles across multiple regions. Since the invasion began in February 2022, a total of 4,552 individuals, encompassing civilians and soldiers, have been liberated from Russian captivity.
Guided by humanitarian considerations, President Putin’s declaration aimed to provide a brief respite from the conflict. He stated:
"Guided by humanitarian considerations, today from 18:00 to 00:00 from Sunday to Monday, the Russian side declares an Easter truce. I order that all military actions be stopped for this period. We assume that the Ukrainian side will follow our example. At the same time, our troops must be ready to repel possible violations of the truce and provocations from the enemy, any of its aggressive actions."
While Putin's statement emphasized hope and preparedness, President Zelensky conveyed the relentless challenges faced by Ukraine even during the declared ceasefire. He detailed:
"At this moment, air raid alerts are spreading across Ukraine. At 17:15, Russian attack drones were detected in our skies. Ukrainian air defense and aviation have already begun working to protect us. Shahed drones in our skies reveal Putin’s true attitude toward Easter and toward human life."
