In a major policy shift, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has unveiled plans for the extensive military expansion of the country's armed forces.
According to the Daily Caller, amid heightened regional tensions, particularly because of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Tusk announced mandatory military training for all adult men and an initiative toward acquiring nuclear capabilities.
On March 7, 2025, during a session at the Sejm, Poland's parliament, Donald Tusk declared the government's intention to dramatically increase the military force to 500,000 members, including reservists, a substantial rise from the current strength of 200,000.
The move comes as an assertion of Poland's need to secure itself against escalating threats. Donald Tusk emphasized the necessity for Poland to enhance its military capabilities significantly, referencing the defense inadequacies exposed by Ukraine's conflict with Russia.
Donald Tusk indicated that the policy overhaul is partly a reaction to the United States halting military aid to Ukraine, which followed a contentious event involving U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on February 28, 2025.
According to Donald Tusk, this military overhaul is not merely a preparation for war but a bid for security resilience. He emphasized that acquiring advanced weapons systems, including nuclear technology, is crucial for national defense.
The Prime Minister further outlined plans to withdraw from international conventions that restrict the use of certain munitions, potentially setting the stage for a more autonomous defense strategy. Among these are the Ottawa Convention and possibly the Dublin Convention, which regulate anti-personnel landmines and cluster munitions, respectively.
He also highlighted the relatively low number of military personnel currently compared to neighboring countries. For perspective, Ukraine's military is about four times the size of Poland's, while Russia boasts a force of approximately 1.3 million. Donald Tusk articulated the critical link between Europe's security and Ukraine's sovereignty, stressing the geopolitical ramifications of any weakening in Ukraine's stand against Russia. This perspective is central to Poland’s strategic defense planning.
To fund this significant scale-up in defense capabilities, Donald Tusk mentioned that financial resources would be redirected from non-essential projects toward the military budget.
While the primary focus is on preparing all adult men for military roles, there was also a mention of potentially including women in the future, although they currently represent only about 3.5% of active military personnel. Funding enhancements and policy shifts indicate a robust approach to national security, aiming to avoid the vulnerabilities displayed by Ukraine post-nuclear disarmament.

As explained by Donald Tusk: "We are planning large-scale military training for all adult men in Poland. By the year’s end, we aim to have a well-prepared reserve force, capable of handling future threats efficiently."
