A Beechcraft Bonanza carrying five people crashed near Lancaster Airport in Pennsylvania last Sunday afternoon.
According to ABC News, following a door malfunction, the aircraft went down shortly after takeoff, fortunately, without any fatalities.
The incident occurred just south of the airport, near a retirement village in Lititz, Manheim Township. The pilot, identified as Matt White, reported an open door to air traffic control before attempting to return to Lancaster Airport. The plane ultimately slid approximately 100 feet after making initial contact with the ground.
Emergency teams rapidly responded to the crash site. All five passengers were swiftly transported to Lancaster General Hospital.
According to a hospital spokesperson, "All five passengers were transported to Lancaster General Hospital, where trauma and emergency teams were at the ready to provide care."
The passengers received immediate treatment. Two severely injured were later transferred to Lehigh Valley Health Network's burn center, one by air and the other by ground ambulance.
Fortunately, the other two passengers were released from the hospital the same night.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his concern and assured the public that state resources were deployed to assist with the aftermath. "Our team at @PAStatePolice is on the ground assisting local first responders following the small private plane crash near Lancaster Airport in Manheim Township," he stated on X.com.
An investigation into the incident has been jointly launched by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). They are looking into the causes behind the crash, notably the reported issue with the aircraft door.
Matt White, who piloted the plane, is a board member of Venture Jets. The company clarified that the flight was a personal trip and not a corporate event. "We can confirm that Sunday's tragic aircraft mishap at Lancaster Airport involved one of our family — Matt White. Matt is a long-time aviation advocate and Private Pilot, as well as an Executive Board Member for our company. The flight in question was a personal flight, in a privately owned aircraft, for personal family travel. The flight was not affiliated with, nor operated by our company, nor were any company employees involved," said a spokesperson for Venture Jets.
Notably, despite the severity of the crash, there were no casualties reported on the ground near the crash site.
This detail underscores the fortunate absence of additional injuries given the proximity of the retirement village to the accident site. It appears that the plane's trajectory avoided populous areas, leading to no additional ground injuries.
