Pilar Del Rey, the revered character actress, has died at the age of 95.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Pilar Del Rey succumbed to natural causes on Sunday in Los Angeles, as confirmed by her family.
Born in Fort Worth, Texas, on May 26, 1929, Pilar Del Rey moved to Hollywood with her family when she was just 11 years old. She was a student at Hollywood High School before pursuing a career in acting. Del Rey made her film debut in "Johnny Stool Pigeon" in 1949, marking the start of a distinguished four-decade career in cinema.
Over the years, Del Rey graced several films with notable performances. Apart from "Johnny Stool Pigeon," her early work included roles in "The Ring" (1952), "And Now Miguel" (1953), "The Siege at Red River" (1954), and "Black Horse Canyon" (1954).
However, it was her role in the 1956 classic "Giant" that left a lasting impression. In "Giant," Del Rey portrayed Mrs. Obregón, a character whose baby is tenderly cared for by Elizabeth Taylor's Leslie Benedict.
Aside from films, Del Rey also had a prolific presence on television. Her credits include appearances on well-known shows such as "Have Gun - Will Travel," "The Wild Wild West," "Police Story," "Mannix," "Barnaby Jones," "Hart to Hart," and "Simon & Simon." Her final screen appearance came in "The Forbidden Dance" in 1990.
A dedicated member of the acting community, Del Rey joined the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) in 1949 and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) in 1955.
