Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro's home targeted by arsonist during Passover celebration

 April 14, 2025

A nighttime attack on the Pennsylvania governor's residence disrupted a sacred holiday celebration and forced the evacuation of Josh Shapiro and his family.

According to the New York Post, a 38-year-old man identified as Cody Balmer was arrested after allegedly jumping a fence and setting fire to the governor's mansion while the family slept during their Passover celebration.

The incident occurred around 2 AM when state police alerted the governor and his family to evacuate the premises. The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire responded swiftly to contain the blaze, which caused significant damage to the south side of the residence, particularly a large entertainment room used for hosting events and displaying artwork.

Swift response prevents tragedy at governor's mansion

Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris announced that Balmer faces serious charges, including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault against an enumerated person. The suspect's arrest marks a crucial development in the investigation, though authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack.

State and local law enforcement agencies collaborated effectively to ensure the safety of the governor's family. The flames were successfully contained to one section of the historic residence, which has housed eight governors and their families since 1968.

Governor Shapiro took to social media platform X to express his gratitude to emergency responders. He shared:

Last night at about 2AM, my family and I woke up to bangs on the door from the Pennsylvania State Police after an arsonist set fire to the Governor's Residence in Harrisburg. The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire was on the scene and while they worked to put out the fire, we were evacuated from the Residence safely by Pennsylvania State Police and assisted by Capitol Police. Thank God no one was injured and the fire was extinguished.

Bipartisan condemnation of violence against public officials

Political figures from both parties have strongly denounced the attack. Senator Dave McCormick, a Republican, emphasized that there is no place for such violence in America or the Commonwealth, calling for full prosecution under the law.

Representative Dan Meuser, another Republican considering challenging Shapiro in future elections, described the incident as an attack on shared American values. The timing of the attack during Passover has raised additional concerns among public officials and community leaders.

Lt. Governor Austin Davis addressed the incident with measured words, avoiding speculation about motives while firmly condemning violence against elected officials and their families. The attack has sparked broader discussions about the safety of public servants and their families.

Critical investigation unfolds amid national attention

The Pennsylvania governor, considered a potential Democratic presidential candidate for 2028, has gained increased national prominence in recent years. Shapiro was reportedly considered as a possible running mate for Kamala Harris in 2024.

Investigators have announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to additional arrests. The extensive damage to the historic governor's residence has been documented through photographs released by Shapiro's office.

Law enforcement officials continue their thorough investigation of the property at 2035 North Front Street. The incident has drawn attention to the challenges faced by public officials and their families while serving in office.

Looking ahead after attempted attack

The arson attack on Governor Josh Shapiro's residence represents a serious escalation in threats against public officials. Cody Balmer's arrest on multiple charges including attempted murder and terrorism has provided some answers, but questions about the motivation behind the attack remain unresolved. The incident occurred at the historic Pennsylvania Governor's Residence while the family celebrated Passover, forcing their emergency evacuation in the early morning hours. As investigations continue, law enforcement agencies are offering a substantial reward for additional information while working to ensure the governor's family's continued safety and security.
