A shocking abduction unfolded at a South African church when Pastor Josh Sullivan was taken at gunpoint during a sermon.

Pastor Josh Sullivan, an American missionary in South Africa, was abducted at gunpoint during a church service in front of his family and congregation. The South African police, along with U.S. authorities, are actively investigating the situation and pursuing leads to ensure his safe return, The US Sun reported.

In a harrowing incident, the 45-year-old U.S. pastor was seized as he delivered his message in Nelson Mandela Bay. The Thursday evening service was abruptly interrupted at 19:00 when four masked men entered the church.

Pastor's Family Witnesses The Traumatic Incident

Sullivan's abduction occurred in front of his wife and children, leaving the small congregation of about 50 attendees in shock. As the service took a terrifying turn, one of the armed men forcibly removed Sullivan while the others targeted worshippers for their belongings.

The assailants robbed the congregation, stealing two cell phones before making their escape. They utilized both a getaway vehicle and Sullivan's personal silver Toyota Fortuner, which was later located abandoned.

Their calculated approach suggested familiarity, as indicated by Pastor Sullivan's friend, Jeremy Hall. He revealed that the gang seemed to recognize Sullivan and addressed his wife by name before escalating their actions.

Authorities And Friends Rally For Sullivan’s Safe Return

In response to the incident, South African police launched an investigation, relying heavily on leads to resolve the case. Jeremy Hall disclosed that authorities are pursuing a suspect as part of their efforts to track down the pastor.

Meanwhile, friends and family have rallied around Sullivan's loved ones during this difficult time. Jeremy and Rebekah Hall are supporting Sullivan’s family, offering their care and prayers. Tonya Morton Rinket, the pastor's mother, expressed her anguish and quest for divine intervention on social media. She emphasized how U.S. officials have been alerted and are assisting in the search for her son.

It is alleged that while a sermon was conducted at the church, four armed and masked male suspects entered the church. They robbed two cell phones and then took the 45-year-old male pastor with them and fled the scene.

Rising Kidnapping Cases Add Complexity

The abduction is not an isolated incident in South Africa, where kidnapping statistics have risen sharply. Recent figures reported 17,061 adult kidnapping cases for 2023/24 alone.

The U.S. State Department acknowledged the situation, confirming their awareness of Sullivan's case. While specific actions remain undisclosed, their active engagement provides a measure of reassurance to the pastor's family. Family and community members, including Mary's brother-in-law Zach Witt, have consistently called for prayers. Witt's appeals reflect the widespread concern for Josh Sullivan's well-being and hope for his safe return.

Josh Sullivan, originally from Maryville, Tennessee, moved to South Africa in 2018. As a dedicated church planter, his mission focused on spreading faith among the Xhosa-speaking community. As authorities continue their investigation, support networks remain strong. Public appeals for intervention emphasize the urgency of the situation and the collective hope for a resolution.

While the incident underscores the challenges faced by missionaries abroad, it also highlights the bravery of individuals like Sullivan. The unfolding investigation remains a focal point for both U.S. and South African authorities, who are committed to a successful resolution.
