A devastating incident unfolded at a Pennsylvania hospital over the weekend.
According to 6ABC Philadelphia, A shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in West Manchester Township took the life of Police Officer Andrew Duarte and injured five others.
The ordeal began on Saturday morning when 49-year-old Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz armed with a handgun and zip ties, ventured into the hospital's Intensive Care Unit. There, he took several staff members hostage, escalating the situation to a critical level.
Archangel Ortiz’s assault did not go unnoticed for long. A doctor, a nurse, and a custodian were among those shot during the chaos. Thankfully, doctors have stabilized their conditions, and they are currently receiving care.
Additionally, the gunfire struck two police officers. Doctors have hospitalized both, but they remain in stable condition. Surveillance video and witness accounts later corroborated the police's decision to use lethal force, deeming it legally justified.
District Attorney Timothy Barker detailed the sequence of events, emphasizing the lack of a clear motive at this stage. "Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz seemed to directly target the ICU," he noted.
