A late-night traffic stop on Long Island turned violent when a New York State Trooper was shot in the leg.
Consequently, a manhunt is currently active for the fugitive after Trooper Thomas Mascia was wounded while attempting to assist a motorist on the Southern State Parkway, as reported by the New York Post.
Moreover, the incident unfolded near Exit 17 in West Hempstead around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Trooper Mascia stopped to check on a black Dodge Charger parked on the median. As he approached, gunfire erupted from the vehicle, striking Mascia in the leg.
Despite his injury, Trooper Mascia managed to move to safety, where he was able to administer first aid to himself. He reported the attack over his radio, calling out, “Shots fired! Shots fired! I’m hit! I think my kneecap is broken.”
He was promptly transported to Nassau University Medical Center by another trooper, where he underwent emergency surgery. Fortunately, the surgery was successful, and by Thursday, Mascia was reported to be in good spirits.
In addition, the suspected shooter's vehicle, described as having custom matte gray dual exhaust tips and bearing the license plate “997636T,” was last seen heading toward New York City. Therefore, law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information about the black sedan or its driver to come forward.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman visited Trooper Mascia in the hospital, remarking on his upbeat demeanor following the surgery. “I wanted to see if he was OK and if he needed anything,” Blakeman said. “He’s doing well. He’s in good spirits, he came out of surgery with flying colors.”
State Police Major Stephen Eudice emphasized that Trooper Mascia's intention to provide assistance tragically led to the violent incident.
“This trooper’s only intention was to help someone who appeared to need assistance. He exited his vehicle with the full intent of helping, yet he became a target as they began firing at him. This is unacceptable,” Eudice stated.
The police union representing state troopers issued a strong condemnation of the shooting, emphasizing the risk law enforcement officers face daily.
The police union issued a poignant statement regarding officer safety: We are sickened by the actions of this cowardly individual who thought nothing of shooting a Trooper who was simply doing his job. We thank the medical providers who are providing our brother with the care he needs, and we will support him as he makes what we hope is a speedy recovery. This incident underscores the dangers our members bravely face every day in service of all New Yorkers and is a reminder that any interaction has the potential to turn deadly. This must serve as a call to action for our state leaders to work closely with our union to ensure the safety of PBA members and the public they protect and serve.
The search for the gunman remains a top priority for multiple state and local agencies. Furthermore, community and law enforcement officials hope for a swift resolution to prevent further harm to the public or police.
Meanwhile, Trooper Thomas Mascia is recovering from his injuries and receiving support from colleagues and the public. Law enforcement is actively pursuing his assailant, while community leaders advocate for stronger measures to protect officers on duty, emphasizing the dangers they face in their commitment to serve and protect.
