An NYPD recruit died after collapsing during exercise at the Police Academy in Queens, leaving fellow officers mourning a career barely begun and key questions unanswered.
Probationary Police Officer Kamir Loubarria passed out while working out at the NYPD Police Academy on Monday, the New York Post reported. Medical aid could not save him.
Loubarria had joined the New York Police Department in April. His death ended a public-service career that had only begun, while leaving the cause of his collapse unknown.
Personnel administered CPR after Loubarria passed out. He was breathing and awake for a time, but his condition later worsened, the Post reported.
He was rushed to Booth Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead at 1 p.m. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch visited the hospital after his condition declined.
The precise exercise Loubarria was performing has not been disclosed. The time of his collapse also remains unclear, as does whether he was pronounced dead inside the hospital or elsewhere after being taken there.
Those missing details matter. A young officer collapsed inside the department’s own training facility, and the public record does not yet explain why.

The NYPD marked his commitment to the city in a public statement issued after his death.

The department’s words put the focus where it belongs: on a recruit who chose police work and the risks that come with serving New York City.
Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry said Loubarria had already earned the respect of fellow officers by taking the oath to protect New Yorkers.
“Our hearts are heavy following the death of our brother police officer who collapsed during training at the Police Academy today. Although his NYPD career was just beginning, he was already a hero, simply for choosing to raise his right hand and dedicate his life to protecting New Yorkers.”
Hendry also pledged that fellow officers would support Loubarria’s family during the difficult period ahead.
