 July 22, 2024

With President Biden stepping aside for the upcoming presidential race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his recommended successor, the focus shifts to who will make Harris the most advantageous running mate in her campaign.

In a recent Politico roundup, nine potential running mates for Kamala Harris were discussed as possible picks for her campaign.

Immediately after President Biden declared his endorsement of Vice President Harris, discussions concerning her potential vice-presidential candidate began to stir among members of the Democratic party. Among the names being considered for this significant role are Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, and Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona.

Democratic Leaders Rally Behind Harris After Biden's Endorsement

The affirmation from several Democratic governors and senators underscores a hasty yet firm rallying around Harris’ candidacy. Philadelphia Democratic Party chair and former Rep. Bob Brady commented on this selection process, noting the qualities that make Governor Shapiro a compelling choice.

"Josh Shapiro, for instance, would be an excellent choice to share the ticket," expressed Philadelphia Democratic Party chair and former Rep. Bob Brady about the criteria for Vice President Harris’s running mate. Discussions about the ideal candidate continue to emphasize the importance of defeating Donald Trump in key battleground states.

Senator Mark Kelly voiced his confidence in Harris's candidacy and abilities. He tweeted, "I couldn’t be more confident that Vice President Kamala Harris is the right person to defeat Donald Trump and lead our country into the future."

Party Unity and Confidence Expressed by Key Democrats

Every discussion and mention of potential vice-presidential candidates has been intertwined with affirmations of support for Harris and reflections on President Biden’s tenure. Governor Gretchen Whitmer praised Biden for his service, saying, "President Biden is a great public servant who knows better than anyone what it takes to defeat Donald Trump."

The decision to endorse Harris and not seek re-election was described by Governor Andy Beshear as both challenging yet in the nation's and party's best interest. Governor Roy Cooper commended Biden’s presidential term, "President Biden has cemented his place among our nation’s finest Presidents."

Reflecting on Biden's presidency, Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized his historic impact, proclaiming, "President Biden has been an extraordinary, history-making president." These declarations show a deep respect and acknowledgment of Biden’s influence within the party.

Potential Running Mate Analysis Highlighted by Strategic Implications

As strategic considerations take front and center, a Democratic strategist close to the White House underscored the critical nature of the upcoming decision. “The question is: who can beat Trump in their home state?” remarked the strategist, spotlighting the pivotal importance of securing swing states.

The urgency and specificity of the situation were encapsulated by Governor JB Pritzker who strongly emphasized the necessity of a firm stance against Trump. Governor Wes Moore supported this sentiment, extolling Biden’s lifelong dedication to American public service.

Secretary Pete Buttigieg further emphasized the importance of Harris’s role in continuing Biden’s legacy and overcoming Donald Trump in the upcoming election, stating, "Harris was the right person to take up the torch, defeat Donald Trump, and succeed Joe Biden as President."

The selection of Harris’ running mate is crucial not just for the upcoming election but also for the future trajectory of the United States. As campaigns begin to form and strategies are honed, the Democratic Party continues to show unity and readiness to compete in what is anticipated to be a highly significant and historic election.
