California Gov. Gavin Newsom's latest move to send emergency resources to Puerto Rico ahead of a tropical storm has raised eyebrows. Many are questioning why he’s looking over 3,000 miles away while tens of thousands of Californians remain displaced by devastating wildfires.
According to Breitbart News, Newsom announced this decision on Thursday, seemingly brushing aside the urgent needs at home. Social media erupted with sharp criticism, pointing out the disconnect between his actions and the struggles of fire-stricken communities.
This isn’t the first time Newsom has faced backlash for his priorities during a crisis. His claim of pre-deploying resources to fire-affected areas in January falls flat when reports show state and local authorities neglected key spots like the Pacific Palisades, even after a recent blaze on state land.
Newsom’s track record reveals a pattern of being absent when California needs him most. Back in March 2023, he reportedly jetted off to Baja California for a personal trip during a blizzard emergency, leaving residents to fend for themselves.
Even after belatedly declaring a state of emergency a week into the storms, he left the state again, returning only on Sunday. While he claimed to be working that evening, communities grappled with shortages of food, fuel, and medicine, often without the promised National Guard support.
His absence during crises isn’t a one-off. Whether it’s wildfires or blizzards, Newsom has repeatedly shown a knack for being elsewhere, leaving many to wonder if his focus is truly on the people he governs.
Newsom’s past vacations have also drawn ire, often timed inconveniently with state emergencies. In 2022, he vacationed in Montana, ignoring California’s own travel ban to socially conservative states, all while using state security resources.
A year earlier, in 2021, he extended the state’s coronavirus emergency, then celebrated Thanksgiving at a villa in Cabo San Lucas rented from a Russian oligarch with a tax fraud conviction. This kind of tone-deaf behavior only fuels public frustration.
Perhaps most infamous was his 2020 dining at the upscale French Laundry with lobbyists, right after urging Californians to avoid restaurants during the pandemic. That hypocrisy sparked a recall effort, though it ultimately failed to unseat him.
More recently, Newsom left California amid ongoing wildfires to test the waters for a presidential run in South Carolina. Such moves suggest his gaze is fixed on national ambitions rather than the immediate suffering of his constituents.
While Puerto Rico’s needs during a tropical storm are real, California’s lack of hurricane expertise raises questions about the logic of this deployment. Critics argue it’s less about aid and more about currying favor with Puerto Rican voters in key states ahead of a likely 2028 Democratic presidential bid.
