A Colorado family's unsettling roadside encounter with Brian Laundrie and Gabby Petito in Utah adds another disturbing detail to the tragic case that captivated the nation.
According to Fox News, newly released FBI documents reveal that a witness observed Laundrie acting "like a lunatic" in Moab, Utah, approximately two weeks before Petito's murder.
The witness, who was traveling with his family from Denver to Las Vegas, reported seeing concerning behavior on August 12, 2021.
After spotting what appeared to be a man slapping a woman near a white Ford Transit van, the family made a U-turn and parked across the street to monitor the situation.
The unnamed witness described Laundrie's behavior as highly volatile, with him repeatedly opening and slamming doors while pacing around the vehicle.
According to the FBI summary, Laundrie appeared to be pleading with Petito and attempted to embrace her, but she pushed him away.
The situation escalated when Laundrie forcefully pushed Petito's legs into the passenger side of the van and closed her door before entering the driver's side. Both individuals were observed crying afterward.
The witness, who had already called 911 earlier that day regarding an unrelated incident with a truck driver, ultimately decided against reporting this encounter. He later contacted the FBI in September after recognizing the couple from news coverage of Petito's disappearance.
The FBI's documentation included detailed maps of the search area in Bridger-Teton National Forest and extensive investigator notes from the period following Petito's reported disappearance on September 11, 2021.
Two days after the murder, witnesses encountered a man identifying himself as Brian near Grand Teton National Park. The man claimed he had been hiking along Snake River for six days and needed to return to his fiancée. According to witnesses, he said:
I need to get back to my fiancée. We earn an income from digital nomad videos, and we're organic farmers from New York.
The investigation also uncovered that Petito's mattress was missing from her van after North Port police recovered it from the Laundrie residence in Florida. Investigators pursued various leads, including boat ownership records and social media posts, while also addressing numerous false sightings.
The tragic case concluded when authorities discovered Petito's remains in the Spread Creek dispersed camping area north of Jackson. A month later, Laundrie's parents led police to his remains in the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park near their Florida home, where investigators also recovered a waterproof bag containing his written confession.
