New Orleans is bracing itself with unprecedented security measures for Super Bowl LIX.
According to the US Sun, New Orleans has augmented security for the Super Bowl due to threats and the forthcoming visit of President Donald Trump.
The city, still shaken by a recent violent vehicle attack on Bourbon Street on New Year’s Day, has been brought under stringent surveillance and control. The postponement of the Sugar Bowl due to said attack has only underscored the heightened security measures being put in place. Now, Super Bowl LIX anticipates about 125,000 fans under the watch of an expanded law enforcement presence.
President Donald Trump’s decision to attend the game has significantly escalated security protocols. A law enforcement source revealed that multiple threats have targeted the President.
In response, officials have intensified precautions by deploying military personnel throughout key areas, including the French Quarter, where they have mobilized 350 soldiers from the Louisiana National Guard.
Authorities have secured major points of interest like Bourbon Street with barricades and armed patrols. Ahead of the big game, military personnel filled the streets around these critical locations, strictly enforcing measures such as no-drone zones and flight restrictions.
Various federal agencies are jointly conducting this significant security operation. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has deployed over 690 personnel on the ground. The Secret Service, FBI, and local police forces are also coordinating extensively to protect both the public and high-profile attendees, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, who is in the city and has received additional threats.
According to DHS, the U.S. remains in a heightened threat environment, though officials do not consider the current threats "specific or credible." Security measures to mitigate potential risks include checkpoints, bag searches, vehicle restrictions, and cooler bans throughout the city.
At the Caesars Superdome, site of the Super Bowl, enhanced stadium security protocols are in full effect. Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick expressed the depth of the police deployment stating, "The city will be a sea of blue," indicating the massive number of police officers involved. Authorities have deployed approximately 2,000 New Orleans police officers and shut Bourbon Street to vehicle traffic to ensure pedestrian safety.
Security within the stadium includes mandatory clear bag policies and the use of metal detectors at all entry points. NFL chief of security Cathy Lanier emphasized the comprehensive nature of the security planning.
Cathy Lanier stated:
We don’t want to focus only on the last incident. We want to focus on being prepared.
Preparatory measures extend to even the smallest details to ensure the event passes without incident. Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi remarked on the extensive planning:
