Gene Hackman, a renowned actor, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were tragically found deceased in their New Mexico home.

According to BBC, A shocking twist in investigations suggests that previously accepted death dates for Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa were inaccurate, with new evidence shedding light on their past activities and the actual causes of their deaths.

Officials had initially believed that Arakawa died on February 11 and Hackman a week later on February 18. Arakawa’s last known activities included various errands on February 11. She visited a grocery store, a pharmacy, and a pet store, finally returning home by 5:15 p.m.

Urgent health concerns in the days preceding the tragedy

On the following day, February 12, Betsy Arakawa, in distress, made multiple calls to Cloudberry Health Clinic seeking medical assistance. She reportedly described symptoms of congestion during her calls. However, despite scheduling an appointment, she neither visited the clinic nor rescheduled.

Betsy Arakawa canceled her medical appointment scheduled for February 12 a few days prior, opting to care for her ailing husband. This decision sadly prefaced the couple's last few days together.

The late couple was only discovered on February 26, more than a week after their presumed deaths. According to medical examiner Dr. Heather Jarrell, the investigation pointed to Betsy passing away first. "Based on the circumstances, it is reasonable to conclude that [Betsy] passed away first," she indicated, shifting earlier presumptions about the timeline.

The medical intricacies behind their passing

Authorities determined that hantavirus pulmonary syndrome—a severe respiratory condition—caused Betsy Arakawa's untimely death. On the other hand, doctors attributed Gene Hackman's demise to severe heart disease, with his Alzheimer's disease playing a secondary role.

A critical piece of evidence came from Hackman's pacemaker, which showed an abnormal rhythm on February 18, pinpointing the likely date of his death. This data provided crucial insights into the sequence of their passing.

Dr. Josiah Child, discussing the interactions with Arakawa, remembered her trying to arrange an urgent appointment. "There were a couple of calls back and forth to just schedule that appointment for the afternoon, but she never showed up. Our office called back several times and never got an answer," he recalled.

Legal representatives for Hackman and Arakawa have moved to block public access to the more distressing details of the case, including body camera footage from the scene. A New Mexico court has since issued a temporary restraining order, with further proceedings set for March 31.

Their beloved pets also succumbed to the tragedy, with a necropsy report revealing that one of the couple's dogs died from starvation and dehydration, painting a sorrowful picture of the household in their final days.

An expert speaking to BBC speculated about Hackman's state in the days after Arakawa’s death. He suggested that the actor, plagued by confusion and grief likely exacerbated by his Alzheimer’s, was unable to adequately respond to the situation.

The complex interplay of medical issues and the tragic end of such storied lives throws a spotlight on the very human aspects of public figures we often place on a pedestal. The community and fans worldwide grapple with the poignant details revealed, hoping for closure as legal proceedings continue to unfold.
