The political landscape is shifting in upstate New York's 21st Congressional District.
According to Fox News, New York State Senator Dan Stec has declared his candidacy for the U.S. House seat soon to be vacated by Representative Elise Stefanik.
President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Stefanik as the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, prompting her resignation and triggering a special election. Stec, a Republican and Navy veteran, is one of the first to announce his intention to fill the impending vacancy.
Dan Stec represents a state senate district that falls within the larger congressional district currently served by Stefanik. People see his local prominence as a significant advantage in his congressional bid.
He is a known figure in the politics of this area, having served in the state senate, where he furthered his reputation as a dedicated public servant.
Stec feels his extensive experience and recognition within the district make him a strong contender. "At the end of the day, it’s about representing the district, and for the last 12 years in Albany, I know what it means to represent the district and if I can do that in Albany I am certain I can do that in Washington," he said.
Highlighting his electability, Stec stated, "My argument is that I am the most electable. If we are concerned about holding this seat and the Republican majority in the House of Representatives, you want to put your most likely-to-win candidate forward and no one can compare the numbers like I do with how much of the district I already represent."
During his last state senate election, Stec received about 104,000 votes, demonstrating significant support that he perceives rivals the backing that has consistently re-elected Stefanik. This, in his view, positions him favorably against other potential Republican contenders.
Among other Republicans considering bids are Anthony Constantino, CEO of Sticker Mule, and potential candidates like Robert Smullen, Christopher Tague, and Steven McLaughlin.
The potential competition from the Democratic side includes Assemblyman Billy Jones, as well as previous contenders Matt Castelli and Paula Collins. Moreover, this upcoming special election will see the Republican and Democratic nominees chosen by party chairs, circumventing the traditional primary process.
Dan Stec emphasizes his commitment and suitability for Congress, saying, "I am proud of my track record, my resume, and my principles. I don’t have any votes that I am embarrassed that I would have to explain like maybe someone from the other side of the aisle I have worked with would have to explain."
