NBC News criticized for misleading comparison of digital signatures to autopen use

NBC News just stepped into a hornet’s nest with a story that’s more spin than substance. The network tried to dunk on a leading Republican for using a digital signature, but in doing so, exposed its own bias and ignorance about basic technology.

As reported by Breitbart, NBC News ran a piece claiming hypocrisy by House Oversight Committee Chair Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., for using a digital signature while investigating President Joe Biden’s use of an autopen.

The story’s premise is flimsy at best. NBC’s headline trumpets that Comer, who’s probing Biden’s cognitive state and use of an autopen for signing documents, somehow undercuts his own case by employing a digital signature on letters and subpoenas.

Apples and Oranges in Media Spin

Let’s unpack this supposed “gotcha.” A digital signature, as used by Comer, involves verification processes ensuring the signer’s identity, making it a secure and legitimate method—hardly a scandal.

Contrast that with an autopen, a machine that can replicate a signature without any personal input. Anyone can operate it, raising valid questions about accountability when used by a president, especially one whose mental sharpness has been openly debated.

NBC’s attempt to equate the two is like comparing a locked diary to a public bulletin board. It’s a false equivalence that only muddies the waters on a serious issue about executive oversight.

Ignoring Biden’s Real Issues

Republicans, led by Comer, argue Biden’s reliance on an autopen suggests he wasn’t fully in control of his administration’s actions. This isn’t just partisan sniping; even outlets like The New York Times have questioned the validation of these autopen signatures.

Yet, NBC showed no curiosity about Biden’s cognitive decline or potential misuse of the autopen during his tenure. Instead, they’ve pivoted to deflecting with a non-story about Comer’s tech-savvy signing methods.

This selective reporting reeks of an agenda to bury legitimate concerns. If a network’s only goal is to kill a story rather than dig for truth, it’s hard to call that journalism with a straight face.

Partisan Desperation on Display

NBC’s narrative seems to boil down to a dismissive “everyone does it.” But Comer’s digital signature carries no hint of deception or incapacity, unlike the autopen concerns tied to Biden’s documented struggles.

The network’s disinterest in Biden’s mental state—even after it became undeniable—speaks volumes. They once hailed him as the best version of himself, a claim that now looks more like wishful thinking than reporting.

Running a story this weak suggests desperation to shield a favored figure. It’s a reminder that some outlets prioritize narrative over nuance, hoping readers won’t notice the sleight of hand.

Credibility Takes Another Hit

While Comer’s signatures are undisputedly authorized, questions linger over who might have accessed Biden’s autopen during his presidency. That’s a distinction with a difference, and NBC’s failure to acknowledge it is telling.

For conservatives, this is yet another example of mainstream media playing defense for progressive figures while ignoring substantive issues. Still, it’s worth recognizing that not every critique of Biden needs to be a personal attack—his administration’s practices deserve scrutiny, not excuses.

NBC’s latest blunder only erodes trust in an already shaky institution. If they keep chasing cheap shots over real stories, they’ll find their audience shrinking faster than their credibility already has.
