Musk's spring departure confirmed by the White House after successful stint

 April 2, 2025

Elon Musk's tenure in government service is nearing its conclusion.

According to Fox News, Elon Musk plans to leave the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) by late spring, in line with the expiration of his special employment contract.

Elon Musk started work at DOGE on January 20, following an executive order by President Donald Trump, serving as a beacon for the new agency's initiatives.

A role was especially crafted for him as a special government employee, a position intended for short-term government assignments.

Uncorrected rumors of Musk's premature exit rejected by officials

The duration of Musk's role was set from the start, limited to 130 days. This places the end of his service on May 30. Recently, a report by Politico suggested Musk was possibly stepping down earlier than planned, which the White House promptly dismissed as inaccurate.

White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, criticized the misinformation, stating, "This ‘scoop’ is garbage. Elon Musk and President Trump have both publicly stated that Elon will depart from public service as a special government employee when his incredible work at DOGE is complete." Elon Musk supported this dismissal with a brief comment, "Yeah, fake news."

Harrison Fields, a spokesman for the White House, further criticized Politico’s report. He remarked on the quality of the outlet's journalism and defended the administration's decision to end certain media contracts.

Trump praises Musk's contributions and anticipated departure

President Donald Trump has expressed his regard for Musk's capabilities, hinting at both the importance of Musk's leadership at DOGE and his inevitable return to his other business commitments. "I think he's amazing. But I also think he's got a big company to run. And so at some point he's going to be going back," said President Trump.

On Musk's departure and skills, Trump added, "I'd keep him as long as I can keep him. He's a very talented guy. You know, I love very smart people. He's very smart. And he's done a good job. DOGE is, we've found numbers that nobody can even believe."

In a recent discourse on the accomplishments expected before his departure, Musk noted, "I think we will have accomplished most of the work required to reduce the deficit by a trillion dollars within that time frame."

DOGE's limited lifespan and plans without Musk

The agency DOGE, established with a distinct sunset clause, is scheduled to dissolve on July 4, 2026. Its purpose to streamline government efficiency seems to be one Musk has taken to heart, aiming to make a significant financial impact within his brief tenure.

A spokesman from Politico responded to the White House's denunciations, affirming their confidence in their reporting despite the criticisms leveled by Trump's administration.

The completion of Musk's term at DOGE aligns perfectly with the end date set for his contract as a special government employee, fulfilling the requirements stipulated back in January and officially marking the end of his unique role within the federal government.
