Most of Trump's Rally Security Not From Secret Service, Says Senator Hawley

 July 20, 2024

Former President Donald Trump suffered an injury during an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally.

According to Western Journal, the incident raises significant questions regarding the composition and expertise of his security team, which was largely not composed of U.S. Secret Service agents.

Rally Security Comprised of DHS Agents, Not Secret Service

Senator Josh Hawley has disclosed that many of the security personnel at Donald Trump's rally were employees from the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), rather than the Secret Service. This revelation has sparked a wave of scrutiny about the adequacy of the security measures in place that day.

According to Sen. Hawley, these HSI agents lacked familiarity with the security protocols typically employed at such high-profile events. This gap in standard operational expertise is now seen as a critical oversight.

The security flaws extended beyond personnel familiarity with standard protocols. Sources indicate that significant procedural measures, such as the deployment of detection canines and stringent access controls, were noticeably absent.

Tensions are high as many question the readiness of the involved security detail. Senator Hawley highlighted, "For example, detection canines were not used to monitor entry and detect threats in the usual manner. Individuals without proper designations were able to gain access to backstage areas."

Hawley Criticizes DHS For Lack of Transparency

The logistics and execution of the security measures have been heavily criticized. J reports suggest vital positions around the venue’s perimeter and near the podium were understaffed or inadequately managed, calling into question the overall effectiveness of the security approach taken.

Senator Hawley's criticism extended beyond the immediate security team to the broader organizational response by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He criticized DHS for its lack of transparency and overreliance on local and state police forces, which he believed contributed to the security lapses.

The aftermath of the incident has led Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, along with other involved parties, to face serious inquiries about their roles and responsibilities in the security arrangements. Furthermore, the Secret Service's involvement and accountability are currently under congressional scrutiny.

As Senator Josh Hawley communicated with whistleblowers and gathered more information, he publicly challenged the readiness and appropriateness of the deployed security measures. He stated, "Unfortunately, your department has not been appropriately forthcoming with Members of Congress — abruptly ending the only call with USSS before most senators could even ask a question. This is completely unacceptable and contrary to the public’s interest in transparency."

Conclusion

The focus now shifts to the upcoming congressional hearing. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle is scheduled to testify before the House Oversight Committee on the 24th of July, where issues surrounding this incident will be a primary topic of discussion.

The Secret Service has publicly committed to a thorough investigation of the incident. Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi assured, "The Secret Service is fully accountable for the safety of its protectees. We are committed to better understanding what happened before, during, and after the assassination attempt of former President Trump to ensure it never happens again. That includes complete cooperation with Congress, the FBI, and other relevant investigations."

This security breach at a high-profile event has ignited a comprehensive examination of both the personnel involved and the procedures in place. The outcome of this scrutiny could potentially reshape future security protocols for events featuring high-ranking officials.
