Tim Walz, who served as a command sergeant major and later turned politician, decided to retire in the spring of 2005. This move came just before his unit, the 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery, was set to deploy to Iraq. Some of Walz’s former comrades disapprove of his actions. Corey Bjertness, a former National Guard chaplain, criticized Walz’s departure as "cowardly," saying he left at a crucial time.
Thomas Behrends, who succeeded Walz as command sergeant major, expressed dismay, suggesting Walz acted traitorously by not staying with the unit.
Veteran Tom Schilling shared similar views, questioning Walz’s character and accusing him of using his military credentials for personal gain. “He used stolen valor for personal gain,” Schilling stated.
The unit’s deployment to Iraq faced hardships, including the deaths of soldiers Kyle Miller and David Berry in 2006. Critics highlight these losses to underscore the seriousness of the deployment Walz opted out of.
