Meghan Markle Speaks on Personal Struggles and Launches Parents' Initiative

 August 4, 2024

Meghan Markle candidly shared her past personal struggles on "CBS Sunday Morning."

Page Six reported that the Duchess and her husband, Prince Harry, have started The Parents' Network to aid parents grappling with their children's challenges due to social media.

During the interview, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, revealed that she has barely started discussing her experiences with bullying.

She bravely shared her previous suicidal thoughts, particularly during her pregnancy with her son, Archie. She stressed that sharing these experiences is crucial in the healing process.

Meghan Markle's Vulnerable Disclosure

"I just didn’t want to be alive anymore," Meghan conveyed during her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, reflecting a dark period in her life. Her recent openness on "CBS Sunday Morning" echoes her commitment to discussing these tough topics publicly.

Alongside her husband, Prince Harry, Meghan introduced The Parents' Network. This initiative is under the Archewell Foundation and is focused on supporting parents dealing with the adverse effects of social media on children. The network is an extension of their ongoing efforts to manage the challenges posed by public scrutiny and the online environment.

The Archewell Foundation's Newest Initiative

Meghan also recapitulated her troubling times with the British media back in 2021. The lack of support she felt from the Palace prompted her to publicly discuss her mental health struggles. This disclosure during her notorious interview with Oprah Winfrey also brought international attention to her situation.

The couple's concerns are not just personal but protective, aiming to shield their two children, Archie and Lilibet, from the harsh realities of life under the public and digital spotlight.

Their initiative seeks to tackle significant issues, such as mental health challenges and the potentially harmful impacts of prolonged exposure to social media.

Meghan's reflections on sharing her journey were poignant:

When you’ve been through any level of pain or trauma, I believe part of our healing journey — certainly part of mine — is being able to be really open about it. And you know, I haven’t really scraped the surface on my experience. But I do think that I would never want
someone else to feel that way. And I would never want someone else to be making those sort of plans. And I would never want someone else to not be believed.

So, if me voicing what I have overcome will save someone, or encourage someone in their life to really genuinely check in on them and not assume that the appearance is good, so everything’s okay, then that’s worth it. I’ll take a hit for that.

Protecting Future Generations

The duchess revealed that it’s all about protection and proactive change. “But all you want to do as parents is protect them. And so, as we can see what’s happening in the online space, we know that there’s a lot of work to be done there, and we’re just happy to be able to be a part of change for good,” Meghan highlighted the importance of The Parents' Network in today's digital age.

In conclusion, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's recent appearances stressed the importance of mental health awareness, the need for community support, and ongoing communication about personal and family challenges in the digital era. Their initiative, The Parents' Network, aims to provide crucial support and resources to parents and promote positive change in the online world.
