Man With Criminal Past Faces Murder Charges After Woman's Body Found in Burned Couch in West Virginia

 May 29, 2024

David Antonio Calderon, a man with a lengthy criminal history, is now facing murder charges in the United States following a troubling discovery in Berkeley County, West Virginia.

According to Breitbart News, authorities in Berkeley County were called to a scene where a fire had consumed a couch in early May.

Upon extinguishing the flames, they discovered the body of a 33-year-old woman, leading to a murder investigation. The victim, previously enrolled in Jefferson County’s home confinement program, had been reported missing prior to this discovery.

Calderon, 46, was arrested in Frederick County, Virginia after law enforcement connected him to this crime. His arrest also stemmed from earlier violent incidents in April, where he allegedly assaulted two homeless individuals with baseball bats behind a Walmart store in Jefferson County. These attacks had already put him on the radar of local authorities.

From El Salvador To U.S. Custody

David Antonio Calderon's path to the United States is marred by decades of criminal activities.

Having spent over 20 years in El Salvador's prisons for offenses ranging from drunk driving to murder, his criminal career is extensive. After his release in August 2021, Calderon tried to seek asylum in Canada but was turned away.

Upon his return to the United States, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) took Calderon into custody.

Despite his criminal history, he was released on a Notice to Appear (NTA) before a federal immigration judge. This decision has since come under scrutiny following the recent charges.

In March 2023, after being denied asylum in Canada, Calderon found himself back in the U.S., where his freedom was short-lived. By May, he was implicated in a murder, bringing his past and the decisions of U.S. immigration authorities into sharp focus.

Legal Challenges and Community Impact

As Calderon currently resides in the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center, he contests extradition to Berkeley County, where he faces the murder charges. This case raises significant concerns about the monitoring and management of criminal aliens within U.S. borders.

The community, especially in Berkeley County, has been left reeling from the brutal nature of the crimes associated with Calderon. The impact on local residents and the victims' families is profound, raising questions about safety and the effectiveness of current immigration policies.

In conclusion, David Antonio Calderon's arrest and the subsequent murder charges against him have highlighted critical issues in U.S. immigration and criminal justice systems. A man with a notorious criminal background in El Salvador, Calderon's presence in the U.S. and the legality of his status continue to pose significant questions.

His attempts to evade justice, coupled with the serious crimes he is now accused of, underscore ongoing challenges in managing and monitoring individuals with complex criminal histories. As this case proceeds, it will undoubtedly remain a focal point for discussions on public safety and immigration enforcement.
