Majority of Democrats Prefer New Nominee Over Biden for 2024

 May 28, 2024

A striking shift among Democratic voters is unfolding as they express a desire to nominate someone other than President Joe Biden for the looming 2024 presidential race.

A Rasmussen poll conducted between May 20-22 found that 54% of Democrats support finding a replacement candidate for Joe Biden before the November election.

Breitbart News highlighted that 49% of the likely voters surveyed by Rasmussen support the idea of Democrats choosing a different candidate instead of Joe Biden.

This sentiment is driven by concerns about Biden's reelection prospects and dissatisfaction with his policy directions, reflecting a significant level of unease within his own party.

Various Candidates Considered for Biden's Replacement

Among possible replacements, various prominent Democrats are being considered. These include Vice President Kamala Harris, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former First Lady Michelle Obama, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Michelle Obama is a favorable alternative with 21% support, followed by Kamala Harris with 17%, and Hillary Clinton with 11%.

The preferences reflect a broader questioning of leadership within the party, suggesting a crucial juncture for Democrats as they prepare for the upcoming electoral challenge. Notably, only 49% of the general population feel Biden should be replaced, a sentiment more pronounced within his party.

The opinion among Republican voters contrasts sharply, with only 43% supporting Biden’s replacement. This might indicate a strategic preference for Republicans, viewing Biden as a weaker opponent in a general election.

Regarding President Biden's situation, John Nolte of Breitbart News stated:

Democrats are looking at the polls, looking at another four years of Donald Trump proving all of their ideas are stupid, and panicking. As far as Biden, he’s proved all of their ideas are terrible, so they want to dump him so they can blame their policy failures on him instead of their bad ideas.

Political Dynamics and Future Implications

The timing of this political sentiment is critical, especially considering the upcoming significant legal trials possibly involving Donald Trump and Hunter Biden, which could sway public and voter sentiment further. The outcomes of these events could dramatically influence the landscape ahead of the November elections.

Regarding potential scenarios, Biden's health could become a decisive factor. There's a prevailing belief that only a serious health issue could prompt his replacement on the ticket. If such a situation occurs, Vice President Kamala Harris would likely be the preferred successor. This poses its own set of challenges and dynamics within the party, which is deeply invested in identity politics.

In conclusion, the Rasmussen poll reveals a Democratic Party at a crossroads, with a significant portion of its base desiring a change in its presidential nominee. While figures like Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris are favored as potential replacements, several factors, including upcoming legal trials and Biden's health, could significantly shape the final decision.

The months leading up to the November election will be crucial for the Democrats as they navigate these complex dynamics and decide whether to continue with Biden or pivot to a new candidate in hopes of maintaining the White House.
