A Maine Democratic Senate candidate's online history keeps getting worse. Graham Platner, 41, appeared to mock a teenage girl's suicide attempt in a Reddit post from May 2012, the New York Post reported, adding yet another layer of controversy to a campaign already drowning in them.
The thread in question featured a photo of a teenage girl hanging out of an upper-story window, with a young man gripping her arms in what appeared to be a rescue. The original poster captioned it: "A girl at my old highschool tried jumping from a window because her cousin died the day before. These students saved her. I have hope."
An account using the screen name P-Hustle, which the Post identified as belonging to Platner, responded with five words: "Someone clearly isn't trying hard enough." That was his contribution to a thread about classmates pulling a grieving teenager back from a ledge.
The suicide-attempt comment is not the first resurfaced Reddit post to haunt Platner's Senate bid. It is the latest in a string stretching back more than a decade. The Post had previously reported on other posts from the same account, and the pattern they form is difficult to dismiss as youthful indiscretion or dark military humor.
In 2014, on the subreddit r/combatfootage, a video showed Hamas terrorists shooting at Israeli soldiers and attempting to kidnap one as the soldier screamed for his life. The P-Hustle account commented: "Looks like an all around well executed and successful small unit raid to me."
Platner's earlier Reddit posts had already drawn scrutiny for disparaging remarks about U.S. service members. In 2019, he commented on famous helmet-cam footage of Pfc. Ted Daniels, a Purple Heart recipient who was shot four times during a Taliban ambush. Platner's response, directed at the wounded soldier: "D*** motherf***** didn't deserve to live. At least his stupidity and fat a** wheezing are available for all future infantrymen to witness and hold in contempt."
A man shot four times by Taliban fighters. And Platner's instinct was contempt.
In 2017, the same account posted about masturbating in portable toilets during military service: "I still have to jerk off every time I sit in a portash***er....that blue water smell conditioned me." In 2021, responding to a Reddit user who suggested adult entertainers should be thanked for their service like veterans, Platner wrote: "Thank you for your cervix."
The Reddit posts are only one front in a widening set of problems for Platner. He has also faced questions about a tattoo that matches the symbol of Hitler's paramilitary unit responsible for the Holocaust. Platner claimed he did not know the tattoo's significance until October 2025, while mounting his Senate bid.
His ex-girlfriend, Lyndsey Fifield, came forward Thursday to dispute that account. She alleged Platner knew what the tattoo meant and kept it to remind himself "the US was the evil bad guy overseas." Platner has previously denied Fifield's allegations.
Fifield also accused Platner of physical conduct in their relationship, including grabbing her hard enough to leave marks and once allegedly twisting her arm behind her back. These are witness claims that Platner has denied, and no charges have been reported. But the allegations add to a growing file of personal conduct questions surrounding the candidate.
The Post also reported that Platner maintained an account on the messaging app Kik that featured a half-naked photo of himself, a detail that has fueled its own separate controversy. Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania publicly challenged Platner to release his Kik messages, a rare instance of a sitting Democratic senator going directly after a candidate from his own party.
Maine State House Minority Leader Billy Bob Faulkingham offered a blunt assessment to the Post:
"Graham Platner is clearly a person with deep and disturbing psychological issues that predate his military service and continue to this day."
Faulkingham is a Republican, so his criticism is expected. What's more telling is the reaction from Platner's own side. Fetterman has broken with his party over Platner's troubled candidacy and has not let up since.
Other Democrats have begun distancing themselves as well. The sexting and messaging controversies alone prompted comparisons to former Rep. Eric Swalwell, and the party's discomfort has only deepened as more posts surface. Fetterman drew the Swalwell comparison himself as colleagues tried to figure out how far to run from a candidate whose digital footprint reads like a catalog of poor judgment.
Platner did not return the Post's request for comment on the newly resurfaced posts.
Set aside the political labels for a moment and look at what the Reddit account attributed to Platner actually contains. A joke about a suicidal teenager. Praise for a Hamas kidnapping operation. Vicious contempt for a Purple Heart recipient ambushed by the Taliban. Crude sexual boasts. And a tattoo linked to Nazi paramilitaries that Platner says he only recently understood.
Each item, taken alone, might be explained away, dark humor, ignorance, a bad day online. Taken together, across a decade of posts from 2012 to 2021, they describe a pattern of conduct that voters are entitled to weigh.
Open questions remain. How did the Post verify that the P-Hustle account belonged to Platner? What, if anything, will Platner say publicly about the suicide-attempt comment? And will Maine Democrats continue to stand behind a nominee whose campaign, as the Post noted, has been "rife with controversy" from the start?
Platner's silence is itself a kind of answer. Candidates who can explain their record usually do.
Maine voters deserve a Senate race fought over policy, over the economy, border security, energy costs, and the direction of the country. Instead, they are watching one party's nominee spend his time not answering questions about Reddit posts, Nazi tattoos, Kik photos, and allegations from an ex-girlfriend.
The Democratic Party has a choice. It can continue to tolerate a candidate whose online trail would disqualify most people from a middle-management job, or it can act. So far, the loudest voice demanding accountability has been Fetterman, a Democrat who has gone on Fox News to make the case against his own party's nominee.
When the most effective opposition researcher against a Democratic candidate is a Democratic senator, the party has a problem it can no longer pretend doesn't exist.
Character isn't a partisan issue. But accountability, apparently, still is.
