King Charles III's Resentment Towards Prince Harry's Criticisms of Queen Camilla

 June 19, 2024

Tensions within the British Royal Family continue as King Charles III harbors resentment towards Prince Harry.

King Charles III remains disturbed by Prince Harry's characterizations of Queen Camilla in his book, leading to a prolonged family rift.

Fox News reported that King Charles has struggled to forgive his son following the release of Harry's memoir, "Spare," in which he indicted Queen Camilla for allegedly manipulating media narratives to enhance her image. These accusations have stirred significant discord within the royal family. Harry's portrayal of Camilla as a figure who engaged with the press for personal advantage has deepened the wedge between him and his father.

Historical Context of Camilla’s Relationship with the Royal Family

The controversy stems from a complex historical backdrop. Queen Camilla, formerly Camilla Parker Bowles, had a long-standing affair with Charles that tumultuously ended his marriage to Princess Diana.

Over the years, however, Camilla transitioned from a figure of public scorn to one of acceptance within the royal family, largely thanks to King Charles' insistence that his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, accept her, which she did publicly around 2002.

This transition was not smooth but reflects the evolving nature of the Royal Family's public image and internal dynamics. Camilla's journey from a controversial figure to royalty culminated in her crowning alongside King Charles III on May 6, 2023, a hallmark event that underscored her acceptance but also reignited past grievances aired publicly in Harry's writings.

A royal expert, Christopher Andersen, noted the depths of King Charles’s feelings regarding his criticisms of Camilla. Harry's stark depictions in "Spare" have strained familial relationships and cast long shadows over possible reconciliations.

The one thing that Charles finds unforgivable is criticism of Camilla... Harry said some pretty devastating things about her. I think that still bothers the King, and I don’t know that it will be easy for him to forgive. I don’t think they’ll ever forgive Harry for that.

Prince Harry’s Isolation and Attempt at Reconciliation

The memoir also includes details of an alleged physical altercation between Prince Harry and his brother, Prince William, stemming from discussions about Meghan Markle, Harry's wife. According to Andersen, Prince William has taken this incident very personally, further complicating the possibility of mending family ties.

Prince Harry has been living in California with Meghan Markle since 2020, following their decision to step back from senior royal duties. This event was driven by the intense media scrutiny and alleged institutional racism they faced. Despite these tensions, Harry made a brief visit to London in February 2022 upon learning of King Charles' cancer diagnosis, a visit that underscores the complexity of familial love amidst ongoing disputes.

Christopher Andersen elaborated on the struggle within the Royal Family to bridge their divides. Despite Harry's efforts to extend olive branches to his brother and father, reconciliation remains elusive.

"He’s on his own. Look, I think if William could find a way to build a bridge of some sort… Harry, I think, is certainly hoping that at some time, the olive branch he has repeatedly extended to his brother and father will be accepted.

As the Royal Family navigates these internal conflicts, the world watches to see if and how the familial bonds will heal. King Charles III's and Prince Harry's strained ties, marked by complex familial and public narratives, remain a poignant saga of loyalty, betrayal, and the search for familial understanding.
