Khalil Fong passes after a long illness at 41

The multi-talented Hong Kong singer-songwriter Khalil Fong's artistic journey came to an end at age 41.

According to Strait Times, the founder of Fu Music label passed away on February 21, 2025, following a five-year battle with an undisclosed illness.

Fu Music announced that their founder departed peacefully in the early hours of February 21. The label's statement highlighted Fong's resilient spirit during his health struggles, while maintaining privacy regarding the specific nature of his condition. His remains were cremated on March 1 in Dali, China.

Musical legacy spans two decades of innovation

Fong's musical journey began at age 15 when he first picked up the guitar. His debut album "Soulboy" in 2005 marked the beginning of a successful career that would influence both Cantopop and Mandopop scenes.

Throughout his career, Fong demonstrated versatility not only as a performer but also as a producer and songwriter. He collaborated with prominent Asian artists, including Eason Chan and Jacky Cheung, contributing significantly to their musical success.

His final live performance took place at Singapore's Esplanade Concert Hall in 2019, where he participated in the Huayi - Chinese Festival of Arts.

Health challenges impact creative process

Fu Music shared their founder's final message:

Fong left this world peacefully and serenely on the morning of Feb 21, 2025, heading to another realm of life to continue his mission and dream. The music and graphic novels he gifted to the world remain an eternal testament to his luminous spirit, a timeless treasure for generations to come.

In 2010, Fong was diagnosed with pneumothorax, a condition causing air leakage between the lung and chest wall. This diagnosis marked the beginning of his health challenges.

Following the release of his 2016 album "Journey to the West," Fong stepped back from his music career citing health concerns. Despite these challenges, he continued creating music, releasing "The Dreamer" in 2024.

Artist's final creative endeavor

The singer addressed his last album's creation process:

In my condition, it was both a challenge and relief from the rather tedious circumstance I was in.

"The Dreamer" became Fong's final gift to his fans, recorded during various stages of his illness. The album stands as a testament to his dedication to music despite physical challenges.

His commitment to creating art remained unwavering even as his health declined. The album demonstrates his ability to transform personal struggles into musical expression.
