After a notable debacle in the recent presidential debate against Donald Trump, President Joe Biden faces skepticism from his party about his re-election campaign.
According to the New York Post, A group of Democratic representatives has voiced concerns and urged him to reconsider his candidacy to secure a Democratic victory in the upcoming election.
Representative Raúl Grijalva from Arizona was among the few Democrats who publicly doubted President Biden’s ability to win re-election. Following a debate viewed as unfavorable for Biden, Grijalva suggested that the Democratic Party might benefit from exploring other potential candidates.
Representative Lloyd Doggett was the first within the party to suggest that President Biden should withdraw from the race. Citing Biden's poor debate performance and diminishing poll numbers, Doggett’s view has resonated among concerned Democrats seeking to retain the presidency.
Members of the moderate Blue Dog Coalition, Representatives Jared Golden and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, also expressed concern over Biden's candidacy. While they stopped short of outright saying he should withdraw, their reservations underscored a growing unease within the party.
"There is a consensus that we need to be very real about our chances," said Representative Raúl Grijalva. "If he’s the candidate, I’m going to support him, but I think that this is an opportunity to look elsewhere," Grijalva added, reflecting a sentiment for practical considerations over party loyalty.
Representative Jared Golden presented a stark opinion on the matter. "Biden’s poor performance in the debate was not a surprise. It also didn't rattle me as it has others, because the outcome of this election has been clear to me for months: While I don’t plan to vote for him, Donald Trump is going to win," he said, indicating a lack of confidence in Biden's campaign from within his party.
A recent CBS News/YouGov survey further elucidated public opinion, showing that a majority of registered voters, including a significant percentage of independents, believe Biden should not continue his campaign.
Such polling data, reflective of Biden's reception amongst battleground states, compounds the predicaments faced by his campaign.
Despite these unfavorable conditions and internal party suggestions, President Biden met with his campaign staff on July 3 and reiterated his intention to stay in the race. "In this race to the end we’re going to win because when Democrats unite, we will always win,” he declared, projecting confidence and unity in the face of adversity.
A conflicting report about Biden considering withdrawal circulated shortly after his reaffirmation, which White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates quickly labeled as "Absolutely false."
Concluding the coverage of the recent events around President Biden’s campaign, while he faces significant challenges from within his ranks and the public's perspective, he remains committed to his candidacy.
The Democratic Party finds itself at a crossroads, considering whether to rally behind Biden or contemplate a shift in strategy as the election nears.
