Kamala Harris Frontrunner in Democrat's 2028 Presidential Race

 March 22, 2025

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is currently the lead contender for the Democrat's presidential nomination for 2028.

According to Breitbart, Harris tops a Morning Consult survey, gaining a significant lead over other Democratic hopefuls.

The survey, which polled Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, depicted Harris as a strong early preference with 36% backing her candidacy. This marks a significant lead compared to rivals, reflecting her enduring influence within the party.

Kamala Harris Signals Continued Political Involvement

Harris, despite previously losing to Republican candidates Donald Trump and JD Vance in earlier presidential races, has publicly reaffirmed her dedication to staying active in politics. She has expressed her intentions by stating, "I am staying in this fight," amidst discussions of her potential gubernatorial bid in California.

While her commitment to politics remains firm, Kamala Harris’s potential pursuit of the California governorship continues to fuel speculations around her political strategies moving forward.

In addition to Kamala Harris, the poll features a variety of Democratic personalities considering presidential runs. Pete Buttigieg, who recently opted out of a Michigan Senate race, is the second most popular choice, securing 10% of the respondent's favor. His decision hints at a likely bid for the presidency.

New Faces Emerge in Democratic Presidential Speculation

Also registering notable interest in the survey are Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz—all garnering 5% support each.

Governor Tim Walz, who once shared a presidential ticket with Harris, has expressed a nuanced opinion about another potential run. Here he discusses his views:

"Look, I never had an ambition to be president or vice president. I was honored to be asked. If I feel I can serve, I will. And if nationally, people are like, ‘Dude, we tried you, and look how that worked out,’ I’m good with that. If I think I could offer something… I would certainly consider that… I’ll do whatever it takes."

Following closely are Mark Cuban and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, each capturing 4% of the survey participants. Furthermore, Senator Cory Booker finds some traction with 3% support.

Broad Range of Contenders Behind Kamala Harris

The poll further details lower-tier candidates like Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Senator Amy Klobuchar, each claiming 2% of the surveyed support. Senators Raphael Warnock and John Fetterman trail with a modest 1% endorsement from Democratic and Democratic-leaning independents.

This early indicator of party preference shows a dynamic field but with a clear frontrunner emerging as the race to 2028 begins to take shape.

Harris's strong standing in the poll underscores her prominent position within the party, despite previous electoral setbacks. It appears Democratic voters are still inclined to see her in a critical role, either within or beyond the party's presidential candidacy.

As the political landscape evolves, Harris's moves will be closely watched, especially concerning her decisions around the California governorship and potential national runs. Similarly, the positions of her Democratic peers will develop as the 2028 election looms closer, setting the stage for what promises to be an intriguing political showdown.
