Kamala Harris Corrected on X for False Trump Abortion Claim, Criticized by Musk

 July 9, 2024

According to Conservative Brief, Vice President Kamala Harris recently faced backlash on the X platform after making a false claim about former President Donald Trump's stance on abortion.

Elon Musk, the platform’s principal shareholder, publicly rebuked Harris and highlighted the platform's commitment to correcting misinformation.

In a June 30 post, Harris asserted that Trump would implement a nationwide ban on abortion if he were re-elected president. This statement was swiftly fact-checked by the X platform, earning a “community notes” correction. Users, including those from left-leaning media, pointed out that Trump has repeatedly stated otherwise.

Musk Criticizes Harris for False Claims

Trump has maintained his support for returning the issue of abortion to individual states, aligning with the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade last year. During a recent debate against President Joe Biden, Trump reiterated his stance on supporting states' rights regarding abortion laws. Harris's claim, however, suggested a federal ban, which was not supported by Trump's statements.

Following her post, Harris faced criticism from several X users, with many referencing reports that accurately represented Trump's position. The most notable correction came from Elon Musk, who questioned the integrity of political statements made on the platform. Musk expressed his frustration with misleading posts, emphasizing the platform’s efforts to ensure accurate information. “When will politicians, or at least the intern who runs their account, learn that lying on this platform doesn’t work anymore?”

Biden's False Claim During Debate

The debate also saw President Biden making a contentious statement, claiming he was the only president this century without U.S. troops dying in conflict. This assertion was quickly fact-checked by X users and the New York Post, revealing that at least 16 U.S. troops have been killed since Biden took office, including 13 during the Afghanistan withdrawal and three in a drone strike in Jordan.

Musk commented on the debate and described it as political theater. He suggested that it was orchestrated and criticized the performance of both candidates. University of Virginia Center for Politics Director Larry Sabato weighed in on the political landscape, noting that Biden's campaign is struggling. According to Sabato, recent polls indicate that Biden is significantly trailing Trump.

Sabato Analyzes Biden's Poll Numbers

Sabato emphasized that the race between Biden and Trump is no longer close, with Biden facing a substantial deficit in the polls. He suggested that a single interview or rally would not be enough to reverse Biden’s declining support.

I don’t think [President Biden] can change the dynamic with one interview. I suppose you’d say stop the bleeding and the bleeding has been bad. I mean, we’ve been looking at all the data coming in, all the surveys — some public, some private — and it’s bad. Democrats need to understand that things are not stable and it is no longer close. The race between Biden and Trump is no longer close.

Sabato pointed out that multiple polls, including those from CNN, show a consistent trend of Biden trailing Trump by six points. This gap represents millions of voters, raising significant concerns for the Biden campaign.

Media Reactions and Public Response

The media's reaction to the debate also drew attention, with CNN commentators criticized for their negative commentary on Biden. Dave Rubin, a host and contributor with The Blaze Media, highlighted Musk’s role in debunking misinformation in real time. He praised Musk for holding political figures accountable on the platform.

Left-leaning media outlets have also reported on Trump’s actual position on abortion, which has been to support state-level decisions rather than a federal ban. This reporting further undermined Harris’s initial claim, reinforcing the platform’s fact-checking measures.

Conclusion

Vice President Kamala Harris faced a fact-check and public rebuke on the X platform for falsely claiming that former President Donald Trump would impose a nationwide abortion ban. Elon Musk, the principal shareholder of the platform, criticized Harris’s statement, emphasizing the importance of truthful political communication. President Biden also faced scrutiny for a false claim about U.S. troop casualties during his tenure. The political landscape, analyzed by Larry Sabato, shows Biden trailing significantly behind Trump in the polls. The public and media reactions underscore the critical role of fact-checking in political discourse.
