The case against Grammy-winning rapper Young Thug has taken a dramatic turn.
According to Newsweek, the controversy has intensified after Young Thug's lawyer filed a motion for the presiding judge's recusal, alleging bias and misconduct.
The spotlight of judicial scrutiny now falls on Judge Ural Glanville of Fulton County, who is overseeing the RICO case led by District Attorney Fani Willis against Young Thug and five others accused of various gang-related activities. Attorney Brian Steel, representing Young Thug, submitted a 27-page document calling for Judge Glanville’s step-down, citing exhibitions of favoritism towards the prosecution.
Recent developments suggest a chaotic environment in the courtroom. Steel previously motioned for a mistrial following an undisclosed meeting between Judge Glanville and the prosecution with a state witness, casting doubt on the fairness of the trial process.
The conflict peaked when Judge Glanville sentenced Steel to a 20-day jail term for refusing to disclose the informant about the private meeting. Although the Georgia Supreme Court stayed this sentence, it added to concerns about the judicial conduct in this case.
In his affidavit, Brian Steel claimed Judge Glanville abandoned his duty to remain neutral. "This court has falsely and wrongly accused [me]... of being unprofessional and unprepared in front of the jury," Steel argued in the affidavit.
The allegation does not end with procedural claims. Steel’s accusations pointed towards what he termed as acts of "witness intimidation, coercion," underlining that the judge was aiding the prosecution.
Another defense attorney, Doug Weinstein, also threw his weight behind the push for recusal but was met with caution from Judge Glanville during the process. This interactive tension mirrors the overall intense atmosphere surrounding this high-stakes legal fight.
Focusing on the recusal motion itself, Steel’s application states forcefully, "Judge Glanville must cease from any further contact with this case, and another judge shall be assigned to hear this motion to disqualify/recuse Judge Glanville."

Anthony Michael Kreis remarked on the intensity, suggesting, "This is a motion you file from which there is no return. It's blistering."

This court has violated every neutrality and impartiality that it was sworn to undertake. The prosecutor sat silent as Affiant was wrongly and falsely accused of improper conduct. This court was a participant and was present during these admonitions/threats to Mr. Copeland. This is witness intimidation and coercion, and the court has become a member of the prosecution team in assisting the prosecution to induce a material witness to testify.
