Johnson Calls for Zelenskyy to Dismiss Ukrainian Ambassador Over Alleged Election Interference

 September 25, 2024

House Speaker Mike Johnson has urged the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to relieve Ukraine’s Ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, of her duties.

The call for dismissal stems from a controversy over an alleged politically skewed event in Pennsylvania, which involved U.S. resources and was seen as a move favoring the Democratic presidential candidate, Fox News reported.

Ukraine’s envoy to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, has come under scrutiny for purportedly orchestrating a tour in Pennsylvania exclusively supportive of the Democratic Party. This tour included a visit to an ammunition factory, enhancing the appearance of a politically charged endorsement.

During this visit, President Zelenskyy was accompanied by senior Pentagon officials. Critically, the involvement of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a potential vice-presidential contender and a Democrat, intensified Republican accusations of political impropriety.

The Allegation of Excluding Republicans

House Speaker Mike Johnson outlined his concerns in a recent communication to President Zelenskyy, decrying the lack of Republican participation at the event. He highlighted that the absence of Republican representatives was not incidental but intentional, deepening the partisan divide.

"The event occurred in a politically sensitive battleground state and was led by a prominent surrogate of Vice President Kamala Harris," Johnson stated. No Republicans had been invited, signaling a clear political motive.

Congressional Inquiry into Zelenskyy’s Visit

The House Oversight Committee, led by James Comer, has initiated a full-fledged investigation into whether there was an abuse of power by the Biden-Harris administration concerning this visit. The inquiry is centered around the use of government resources and whether the administration sought to leverage President Zelenskyy’s presence for electoral advantage.

The Committee's inquiry aims to ascertain if the Biden-Harris administration used President Zelenskyy to unfairly influence the upcoming presidential election. This investigation follows allegations that the administration could be engaging in practices that might disrupt the fundamental fairness required in electoral processes.

In his correspondence, Representative Johnson reiterated his condemnation of foreign interference in American politics. He emphasized the bipartisan support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia but cautioned that such episodes might strain these relationships.

"The bureau seeks to determine whether the Biden-Harri's Administration attempted to use a foreign leader to benefit Vice President Harris’ presidential campaign and, if so, necessarily committed an abuse of power."

Zelenskyy’s Earlier Engagements with U.S. Politicians

This incident marked not the first interaction between Ukrainian officials and Democratic leaders. Last year, Speaker Nancy Pelosi was seen alongside Oksana Markarova at an event displaying photos from the conflict in Ukraine.

Mike Johnson’s request for Ambassador Markarova’s termination underscores a broader concern concerning foreign influence in American electoral affairs, especially as the presidential election approaches. He cautioned President Zelenskyy against allowing Ukrainian affairs to become too closely aligned with U.S. political conflicts.

As investigations proceed, this incident serves as a focal point for ongoing debates over the propriety of foreign involvement in domestic politics, especially when such interactions may tip the scales in a hotly contested presidential race. The House GOP’s probe into this matter confirms the delicate balancing act foreign diplomats must maintain while engaging with American officials.
