Jack Del Rio Resigns From Wisconsin Staff After DUI Incident

 November 11, 2024

Jack Del Rio, a former NFL head coach, has decided to step down from his position at the University of Wisconsin following an arrest for drunk driving that resulted in property damage.

After being arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence and damaging property, former NFL coach Jack Del Rio will resign from his advisory role at the University of Wisconsin, the New York Post reported.

Authorities apprehended Del Rio in November 2024 after he collided with a street sign and a fence, causing his vehicle to come to a halt in a residential yard. Witnesses who observed the incident directed the police to him.

Witness Account and Immediate Arrest

The former coach displayed signs of impairment at the scene, where he admitted to driving at the time of the accident. This led to his arrest and a citation for first Operating While Intoxicated (OWI).

Jack Del Rio joined the Wisconsin football team's staff in August 2024, offering his extensive experience as a senior advisor.

Del Rio Chooses to Step Down

Understanding the potential distraction to the team's season, Del Rio chose to resign, allowing the team to concentrate on their upcoming games without further disturbance. The University of Wisconsin responded swiftly, with a public statement recognizing the incident and expressing their commitment to comprehending the full scope of the situation.

This event occurs as the Wisconsin team, under the leadership of head coach Luke Fickell, prepares to contest a significant game against the top-ranked Oregon team following a bye week.

Wisconsin's Response to the Incident

Jack Del Rio's coaching background is substantial, with notable stints as the head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Oakland Raiders, in addition to being a defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders.

Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell addressed the media, stating, "He’s going to move forward and he’s going to resign and move on, But it’s a tough situation, decisions that all of us have to be able to take full responsibility for. So, that’s what Jack will do and we’ll continue to move forward."

"We’ve got a few weeks left in the season, a lot of things to continue to fight for and nobody wants to take away from that, whether it’s me or Jack or anybody within our football program. We’ll move forward from that," added Fickell.

Del Rio's Statement on the Resignation

Del Rio expressed his gratitude towards the university and his regret over the circumstances leading to his decision. “I’m grateful to Coach Fickell and the University of Wisconsin for the opportunity to work with such a talented coaching and support staff and some of the best young football players in the country,” he stated.

"I have decided to step away from my position with the team, so they can focus all their attention on the remainder of the season," Del Rio added.

In conclusion, Jack Del Rio's resignation from the University of Wisconsin follows his recent arrest and OWI citation. This choice aims to minimize disruptions as the Wisconsin team sets its sights on the remainder of what promises to be an eventful season.
