J.D. Vance Tops Turning Point Action VP Straw Poll for Trump's 2024 Run

 June 17, 2024

The recent Turning Point Action’s “People’s Convention” straw poll surprisingly propelled Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) as the top choice for Vice President in the upcoming election alongside former President Donald Trump.

According to Breitbart News, Senator J.D. Vance emerged as a frontrunner with 43% support among participants, establishing a significant lead over other prospective candidates for Donald Trump’s vice president.

Straw polls, while not definitive, reflect current supporter sentiment and can influence campaigning dynamics. Conducted by Big Data Poll, this particular survey encompassed viewpoints from 1,986 attendees at the event organized by Turning Point Action.

Robust Support from GOP Members and Analysts

Senator Vance's leadership abilities have garnered considerable support within the GOP and marked him as a contender who resonates strongly with Midwest voters, a key demographic for the presidential race. "He has consistently been one of President Trump’s most capable and articulate defenders and surrogates and he speaks right to the Midwest Americans who attended our Detroit conference," noted Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA.

These sentiments were echoed by Ashley Etienne, former communications director for Vice President Kamala Harris, who highlighted Vance’s formidable debate skills. "He’s just got a quality about him where he’s super smart and sharp and quick-witted," Etienne remarked during an interview on CNN's Laura Coates Live.

Senator Vance's fellow candidates in the straw poll included Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), who garnered 15.4% of the vote, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), with 7.7%, and Governor Doug Burgum (R-ND), who received 7%. Despite their efforts, they trailed significantly behind Vance.

Vance’s Diverse Appeal and Political Insight

Charlie Kirk further praised Vance's potential during the convention, emphasizing the electoral strategy to engage voters across the traditionally Democrat-supporting "blue wall" states. "These are precisely the blue wall Americans we need to win in November to reclaim the White House," he asserted.

Vance, who won Ohio’s open U.S. Senate race against Democrat Tim Ryan last November, has a political platform grounded in reviving America's manufacturing sector with tariffs and strict industry regulations.

His memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy," which outlines the socio-economic challenges faced by his hometown Middletown, Ohio, adds a personal touch to his political narrative, enhancing his connection with voters.

Ashley Etienne further emphasized Vance's potential impact in the upcoming electoral debates, particularly against Vice President Harris.
"He poses the greatest threat to Kamala Harris during debates due to his incredible debating skills and a quality that makes him seem palpable to the one or two percent who may be on the fence," she assessed.

Controversial Stances and Strong Advocacy for Trump

Vance's alignment with Trump is marked by his vocal support and defense of the former president's actions and policies. He has publicly dismissed the allegations that Trump endangered lives on January 6, 2021, labeling them "absurd."

This stance extends to Vance’s criticism of legal challenges faced by Trump. In May, following Trump's controversial business records trial, Vance condemned the proceedings as the "definition of fascism," showcasing his unwavering loyalty and aligning himself with Trump's rhetoric and base.

As the race to the 2024 presidential election heats, Vance’s victory in this straw poll not only positions him as a leading candidate for the vice-presidential slot but also highlights his strong conservative credentials and appeal to an essential voter base. The coming months are sure to further test his political resilience and appeal among the broader GOP and national electorate.
