Meta has recently uncovered an Iranian-backed hacking operation targeting U.S. political figures.
According to AP, Meta's investigation exposed a scheme wherein hackers, masquerading as tech support personnel from prominent companies, targeted WhatsApp users including those tied to the Trump and Biden administrations.
The nefarious activities, brought to light by the social media giant, involved hackers presenting themselves as support agents from reputed companies like AOL, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Google. Their main targets were political and diplomatic officials from the Middle East, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
The FBI has identified these hacking attempts as part of Iran's larger strategy to disrupt the U.S. presidential election process. They aim to sow discord and undermine confidence in democratic processes.
A small number of the accounts targeted through these attempts were blocked as a precautionary measure by Meta. This action underscores the seriousness with which Meta is treating the threat of foreign interference in American politics.
Amidst these cyber threats, U.S. intelligence has noted that such activities by Iran have multiple objectives. They intend to confuse voters, erode support for strategic U.S. allies like Israel, and push back against candidates disfavored by Tehran.
Furthermore, according to Google's threat intelligence team, the offenders associated with Iran's Revolutionary Guard have been trying to infiltrate personal email accounts linked to key figures in both the Biden and Trump camps since May. This revelation aligns with similar findings from Microsoft regarding Iranian cyber activities aimed at the U.S. election.
The attacks are emblematic of Iran's broader geopolitical strategy. The U.S. intelligence community views these acts as part of Iran's broader objectives to undermine U.S. democracy, mainly as retaliation against policies from the Trump administration such as the withdrawal from the nuclear deal and the imposition of sanctions.
Additionally, Iranian groups have covertly supported U.S. protests related to foreign policy issues concerning Israel, suggesting a deep-seated interest in influencing U.S. domestic affairs.
Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines highlighted that Iran’s government gave covert support to American protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza, marking a significant revelation about the nature of foreign interference.
Speaking on the matter, U.S. intelligence officials elaborated on Iran's tactics, stating, "Iran’s increasingly aggressive use of cyberattacks and disinformation has several motives: to confuse and polarize voters to undermine confidence in U.S. democracy, to erode support for Israel, and to oppose candidates that it believes will increase tension between Washington and Iran."
We have not seen evidence of the targeted WhatsApp accounts being compromised, but out of an abundance of caution, we’re sharing our findings publicly, in addition to sharing information with law enforcement and our industry peers.
