Investigation Underway After US Army Sergeant Found Dead in Missouri

 October 25, 2024

A terrible discovery near a military base in Missouri has led to a full-scale investigation.

US Army Sgt. Sarah Roque was found deceased in a dumpster near Fort Leonard Wood, prompting a homicide probe, New York Post reported.

The grim find was made on Monday evening close to housing facilities intended for single soldiers, triggering immediate concern and a series of investigative actions by military authorities.

Community Shocked by Soldier's Suspicious Death

The 23-year-old did not show up for her assigned military duties earlier in the week, prompting someone to report her missing. Major General Christopher Beck expressed profound sorrow over the tragic circumstances surrounding Sgt. Roque’s death while addressing the incident.

Maj. Gen. Beck highlighted the impact of the loss on both the family and the unit, describing it as a painful event nobody should have to endure.

On Thursday, authorities made an arrest, taking an unnamed suspect into custody in connection with Sgt. Roque's death. The Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division is handling the investigation, treating her death as a homicide.

Arrest Made as Community Mourns

Originally from Ligonier, Indiana, Roque enlisted in the US Army in 2020 and served as a mine dog handler. Throughout her service, officials recognized her with multiple commendations.

These include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.

In his statement, Maj. Gen. Beck stated, "Sarah not only served our country bravely and honorably as a soldier, she was also a daughter, a sister, and a friend to many." This reflects the deep personal loss felt by those who knew her beyond her military role.

Maj. Gen. Christopher Beck Reflects on the Loss

As a commander and a leader, this is a tragedy. This is something that we never want to happen, we never want for the family to have to endure, or for the unit to have to endure. Sarah not only served our country bravely and honorably as a soldier, she was also a daughter, a sister, and a friend to many.

The community and the military base feel deep disturbance over Sarah Roque’s untimely and tragic demise. The ongoing investigation seeks to uncover the full circumstances surrounding her death and to ensure that officials serve justice.

Further updates will be provided as the Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division continues its inquiry. Meanwhile, as the case develops, many hold onto Maj. Gen. Beck's words and hope for a resolution that honors Sgt. Roque’s service and memory. Indeed, people will not forget her impactful life and commendable service, which her numerous awards attest to in recognition of her dedication and hard work.

In addition, the investigation into Sgt. Roque's death, at this early stage, has seen significant progress with the custody of a person of interest. Consequently, officials are urging anyone with more information to come forward to aid the inquiry. Ultimately, the hope is that clarity and justice will soon follow for Sgt. Roque and all those affected by this devastating event.
