ICE detains international student from University of Minnesota

 March 30, 2025

Last Thursday, a sudden detention disrupted the life of an international graduate student at the University of Minnesota.

According to Fox News, An operation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) led to the detention of the student at an off-campus location, underlining a larger crackdown on foreign students and faculty at American universities.

ICE agents took the student from their residence while they were enrolled at the Carlson School of Management on the university's Twin Cities campus in Minneapolis. Authorities have not released specific details about the student's identity or the reasons behind the detention.

The Academic Community Reacts to Sudden Detention

The University of Minnesota expressed concern over the incident, stating that they had no prior information about the detention. University authorities are currently providing legal and other forms of support to the detained student.

Dean Jamie Prenkert of the Carlson School of Management voiced his alarm at the event. According to him, such detentions severely impact the university's community, which prides itself on its international inclusivity.

Jamie Prenkert commented on the incident:

Detentions like these deeply affect our community. From the very beginning of the University’s business school, our doors have been open to international students. Faculty, staff, and scholars hailing from different countries have strengthened our research and classrooms—shaping us into the Carlson School we are today.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also responded to the situation, seeking further details from Homeland Security. He emphasized the university's significant role as a global educational and research hub.

Governor Walz shared his immediate actions following the incident. "I just spoke with Homeland Security to get more information and I will share when I learn more," he expressed, adding that the state prides itself on hosting international students for education and research, and answers were needed regarding this detention.

Political Figures Voice Concern Over Broad ICE Action

Senator Doron Clark openly criticized the federal administration's approach, commenting on the need for college campuses to serve as safe places free from such federal interventions. He expressed both sadness and frustration over the administration's apparent targeting of the academic community.

Senator Clark's remarks highlighted his stance on the issue: "I am saddened and angered that ICE is operating around the University of Minnesota," he stated. "Our campuses should be a safe place for all students, staff, and visitors… We must stand up against the Trump administration’s senseless demonization of our friends, family and neighbors," he asserted.

This detention is not an isolated event. In recent weeks, other prestigious institutions like Columbia University and Tufts University have also witnessed ICE detentions, particularly following anti-Israel protests. Furthermore, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that authorities have revoked around 300 visas of international students, targeting individuals he described as "disruptive social activists."

Rubio defended the actions, asserting that the U.S. government grants visas for academic purposes, not for engaging in disruptive campus activism. "It might be more than 300 at this point," Rubio stated, adding, "We do it every day. Every time I find one of these lunatics, I take away their visa," he mentioned, explicating the criteria for revocation as interference in peaceful campus activities.

Overall, the detention of the University of Minnesota student reflects a broader federal stance on limiting the actions of international students on U.S. soil, raising important questions about academic freedom and the essential role of international scholars in American educational institutions. As the situation unfolds, the university continues to offer support to its international students, while political and academic leaders call for reconsideration of policies that they claim threaten the foundational values of higher education and international collaboration.
