Even though the Hunter Biden case appeared to be an open-and-shut case, most of us were still worried that a local jury would let Hunter off the hook. Thankfully, that did not happen.
The jury found Hunter guilty on all three counts and took only hours to make its decision. The first two counts were for having lied on his application forms, and the third count was for possessing a gun while addicted to or using illegal drugs.
Hunter's sentencing trial is not for a few weeks yet, but the judge could sentence him to up to 25 years in jail and fine him up to $750,000. Since he is a first-time offender, don't get your hopes up too high about a big sentence being handed down in the case. Prosecutors have already hinted they will be lenient on Hunter, so I expect something like house arrest and a stiff fine.
Hunter's legal team is not giving up, though, recently filing for a new trial, arguing:
"Mr. Biden filed two notices of appeal in this case to the Third Circuit raising claims on appeal that would prevent a trial on any count in this case—a first notice on April 17, 2024, and a second notice on May 20, 2024. The Third Circuit entered an order dismissing the first appeal on May 9, 2024, but the issuance of the mandate was delayed while the Third Circuit considered Mr. Biden's petition for rehearing and rehearing en banc.
"The Third Circuit entered an order dismissing Mr. Biden's second appeal on May 28, 2024, and denied Mr. Biden's rehearing petition on the first appeal on May 31, 2024. The Third Circuit, however, did not then and has not yet issued its mandate as to the orders dismissing either appeal. Thus, when this Court empaneled the jury on June 3, 2024 and proceeded to trial, it was without jurisdiction to do so."
The Office of Disciplinary Counsel immediately moved against Hunter Biden once the verdict was announced. The office immediately filed to suspend his law license, and on Tuesday, that request was granted. The court ruling stated:
"The respondent is suspended immediately from the practice of law in the District of Columbia pending resolution of this matter."
Hunter has a Juris Doctor degree from Yale University (1996) and previously worked for the law firm Boies Schiller Flexner. However, Hunter has not practiced law in some time. Still, this removes yet another possible avenue for income for Hunter Biden, that is, if he ever chooses to leave his house and make money doing something other than his cute little watercolors.
As I mentioned above, I am not sure how long it has been since Hunter has actually practiced law, but this still has to be considered a crushing blow to him. Some of Hunter's previous business dealings required him to have a law license, so a lot of those family scams are now out the window. Over and above everything else, this isn't very embarrassing for the family.
