House Republicans Announce Bill To Ban Biden From Removing Barriers At Border

 January 26, 2024

In a bold legislative move, House Republicans have drawn a line in the sand.

Rep. Mike Collins spearheads an effort to cement state-built border barriers into permanence.

Washington – Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) has introduced a bill aimed squarely at maintaining state-erected border barriers, challenging federal authority over border security policies.

The Restricting Administration Zealots from Obliging Raiders (RAZOR) Act was crafted in response to a recent Supreme Court decision that permits the Biden administration to dismantle Texas's razor wire barriers. This new legislation underscores the escalating tug-of-war between federal and state powers over border control.

The Legal Battle Over Border Barriers

The Supreme Court's narrow 5-4 ruling allowed for the temporary removal of Texas's barricades, sparking immediate backlash from Collins and other GOP members. They argue that the barriers are essential for deterring illegal immigration.

Collins, in particular, has taken to social media to voice his discontent and rally support from his Republican colleagues, emphasizing the need for Congress to take action where the Supreme Court has not.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has echoed this sentiment. He stands defiant against the ruling, underscoring Texas's right to self-defense and the state's commitment to continue using razor wire to combat illegal border crossings. Abbott's stance has found resonance among many Republican governors, and even some members of the GOP have suggested disregarding the Supreme Court's decision outright.

Bipartisan Concerns and Senate Negotiations

While the Republican front has been vocal and unified in its criticism, the issue has also seen an unusual crossing of party lines. Some House Democrats have joined Republicans in expressing concern over the Biden administration's handling of immigration policies.

These bipartisan apprehensions have led to Senate discussions on a potential border agreement, with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas at the helm, despite facing impeachment proceedings himself over his management of the border situation.

Collins posted on X:

Today, I’m introducing the RAZOR Act. This bill would ban the federal government from removing Texas or any other state’s border barriers. If the Supreme Court won’t allow states to defend their sovereignty and our nation, Congress has a moral imperative to act. President Biden is aiding and abetting illegal aliens who are swarming our border and raiding our country’s resources. Why else would he try to stop the state of Texas from turning them back to Mexico? With the Supreme Court siding with the America Last policies of the Biden administration, Congress must stand with Governor Greg Abbott as he fights for the sovereignty of his state and our nation.

A Question of State Sovereignty and Federal Authority

The debate over state versus federal jurisdiction in immigration enforcement has been brought into sharp focus by the RAZOR Act. Collins and his supporters argue that President Biden's efforts to remove Texas's barriers are a direct attack on state sovereignty and an abetment to illegal immigration.

The Biden administration, however, has argued that such state-erected barriers interfere with the operations of the U.S. Border Patrol.

The friction between the executive branch and state governments is further complicated by the involvement of various Republican governors. They have shown solidarity with Texas, potentially setting the stage for a broader confrontation over immigration enforcement and states' rights.

Conclusion

Rep. Mike Collins's introduction of the RAZOR Act marks a significant moment in the ongoing battle over immigration policy and state versus federal authority in the United States.

The Supreme Court ruling allowing the Biden administration to remove Texas-installed barriers has ignited a firestorm among Republicans and some Democrats alike, leading to bipartisan Senate negotiations and a reexamination of the country's approach to border security.

The RAZOR Act challenges the federal government's decisions and serves as a testament to the deep divisions and high-stakes tensions that underlie the immigration debate in America.
