Hollywood Stars Express Frustration After Presidential Debate

 June 28, 2024

Hollywood celebrities, including Barbra Streisand, John Cusack, Mark Hamill, and Stephen King, expressed their frustrations online during the debate, criticizing Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and CNN's moderators.

According to Daily Mail, the debate's chaotic nature and perceived poor moderation led to widespread disappointment among supporters. President Joe Biden, battling a cold, initially seemed disoriented, which worried his supporters. As the debate continued, he slowly regained his composure, yet this did little to alleviate the growing concerns regarding his effectiveness.

In contrast, former President Donald Trump showcased his typical vigor, but his remarks included numerous inaccuracies, with fact-checkers noting at least 30 false statements.

Celebrities Take to Social Media with Harsh Words

The reactions from Hollywood were swift and severe, with many using their platforms to voice their discontent. Artists from various fields shared their disillusionment with the way the debate was handled and the behaviors displayed. Notably, none expressed direct support for Biden's performance, which added an extra layer of concern for the Democratic campaign.

Voices like Barbra Streisand, a celebrated singer and actress, and John Cusack, a reputed actor, were particularly vocal. They criticized the CNN moderators for allowing Trump to divert from the questions without consequence.

Barbra Streisand questioned, "What is wrong with these two moderators who let Trump change the subject? They ask him a question, but then let him go on a rampage about something else. Not so fair!"

Actor John Cusack echoed a similar sentiment, accusing CNN of "letting this deranged liar lie with no consequences." The moderation by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash came under heavy fire for not challenging Trump’s falsehoods more assertively.

Debate Viewed as Entertainment Over Substance

Critics and spectators alike condemned the seeming transformation of the debate into a spectacle rather than a substantive discussion. Author Stephen King lamented the commercialization of the event, suggesting it prioritized entertainment value over democratic debate.

Actress Nia Long described the debate as "deplorable," reflecting a feeling of exasperation that permeated much of Hollywood's response.

Even amid the critiques, some celebrities looked to future possibilities. Actor Jesse Williams shared a meme hinting at California Governor Gavin Newsom stepping up, indicating some desire for new leadership within the Democratic Party.

Support for Biden Amidst Criticism

Amidst the disappointment, Mark Hamil, renowned for his role in "Star Wars," provided a nuanced view. He recognized Biden’s poor performance but also reminded his followers of Biden's achievements and Trump’s controversial past.

Mark Hamil stated:

One off night doesn't change the fact that Joe Biden is the most legislatively successful [president] in our lifetime. One off night also doesn't change the fact that the former guy is a convicted felon, serial liar & adjudicated rapist who is unfit for ANY office. Period.

The debate in Atlanta did not meet the expectations of many, with key figures in Hollywood expressing their dissatisfaction. The critiques ranged over the conduct of both candidates, the moderators, and the commercialization of the event. As America heads towards the election, the fallout from this debate might play a significant role in shaping public opinion. Celebrities, leveraging their influential platforms, have highlighted concerns while also sparking conversations on the future of Democratic leadership and the integrity of political discourse.
