A tragic helicopter crash in the Hudson River claimed the lives of six individuals, including a family of five and the pilot.
According to Fox News, a helicopter operated by New York Helicopter Tour encountered a fatal accident near Jersey City, New Jersey, on April 10, 2025, leading to the deaths of all on board.
The incident occurred on a Thursday afternoon when the helicopter, just 18 minutes after its departure from a Downtown Manhattan heliport, plunged into the waters near Jersey City. The pilot had communicated a critical need to refuel shortly before the mishap.
The victims included Siemens executive Agustin Escobar, his spouse Mercé Camprubí Montal, a global manager at an energy technology company, and their three young children. The family, tourists from Spain, was visiting New York City.
The identity of the pilot, who also perished in the crash, had not been released by the following morning. Michael Roth, CEO of New York Helicopter Tour, highlighted the unexpected nature of the accident, noting the pilot's last communication indicated a straightforward intention to land for refueling.
Emergency response teams, including NYPD and FDNY divers, were quick to reach the scene. Some victims were declared deceased at the location, while others passed away at local hospitals.
Initial speculations about the cause of the crash include a possible bird strike or a malfunction in the helicopter's rotor blades. These hypotheses stem from observations made by Roth, who had viewed footage of the falling helicopter.
Roth explained, "The only thing I know by watching a video of the helicopter falling, that the main rotor blades weren’t on the helicopter. The only thing I could guess – I got no clue – is that it either had a bird strike or the main rotor blades failed. I have no clue. I don’t know."
The tragic event prompted a swift recovery operation. A crane vessel dispatched by the Army Corps of Engineers managed to retrieve the submerged helicopter from the Hudson River.
As investigations continue, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), along with the U.S. Coast Guard and other local entities, is leading the probe into the crash's exact cause.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event, remarking on the poignancy of such an accident occurring to tourists. The mayor compared the emotional weight of the incident to the famed emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River in 2009, where all aboard survived.
"Our hearts go out to the families of those who were onboard. It's almost reminiscent of the plane going down here on the Hudson River. Thank God we didn't lose any lives back then. It's still fresh and still new, the investigation is ongoing, and … the family members, we lift them in prayer," stated Mayor Adams.
The Airbus Group, the parent company of the helicopter's manufacturer, has declined to comment pending the preliminary analysis from the crash investigation. The city, a major hub for both business and tourism, had not witnessed a similar helicopter crash since the 2019 incident when a helicopter collided with a skyscraper, resulting fatally for the pilot's death alone.
As the community and the victims' families begin to process this unforeseen tragedy, the investigation aims to uncover the specifics, hopefully preventing such incidents in the future.
