Harris Campaign Co-Chair Clarifies VP’s Stance on Police Funding

 July 27, 2024

Mitch Landrieu, co-chair of Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign, recently responded to her previous comments regarding police funding on CNN's "Situation Room."

According to Breitbart, Mitch Landrieu stated that Vice President Kamala Harris maintains a balanced stance on enforcing the law and reforming community safety finances.

During the interview, Mitch Landrieu emphasized that Vice President Harris’s earlier support for the "defund the police" movement has often been misinterpreted. Landrieu clarified that her views have continuously supported a balanced approach toward police and community safety measures.

This discussion was sparked by CNN’s KFILE findings that revealed Harris’s praise for the defunding movement before she became the vice-presidential candidate in June 2020. Harris had critiqued traditional safety measures, proposing a reallocation of budgets to better reflect community safety priorities.

Mitch Landrieu reiterated that the Vice President, a former prosecutor and Attorney General of California, had not abandoned her tough stance on serious crimes, but advocated for integrating smart reform measures. According to him, the administration has increased funding for law enforcement while also supporting community services such as mental health and substance abuse programs.

Debating Reallocation of Police Funds

Throughout the interview, Pamela Brown, the host, pressed for clarity on whether Harris still supports moving funds from police departments to other community safety initiatives.

Landrieu countered, explaining that her position was more nuanced than simply withdrawing support from police departments.

The debate highlighted a critical discourse around the balance of funding for law enforcement and community services. Responding to persistent questions, Landrieu carefully separated Harris’s past statements from her current governmental policy actions.

Kamala Harris had previously stated, "Defund the police, the issue behind it is that we need to reimagine how we are creating safety. This whole movement is about rightly saying, we need to take a look at these budgets and figure out whether it reflects the right priorities. For too long, the status quo thinking has been, you get more safety by putting more cops on the street. Well, that’s wrong."

Conclusion

Landrieu disclosed that under the current Biden-Harris leadership, the emphasis remains on a holistic approach to safety, including substantive backing for both the police force and community services. By enhancing funding for law enforcement and simultaneously promoting rehabilitation and mental health programs, the administration seeks to ensure a comprehensively safe environment for all communities.

The conversation circled back to Harris’s previous endorsements of funding shifts as crucial to reimagining community safety landscapes. Mitch Landrieu’s defense underscored that while the terminology might have evolved, the core principle of balancing priorities remains intact in Vice President Harris's policy approach.

Mitch Landrieu's explanations aim to clarify that Vice President Kamala Harris's position on police funding and community safety is tightly integrated, supporting robust policing complemented by equally strong community support systems.

Whilst acknowledging her past statements in favor of reallocating police budgets, the current administration's practices reflect a broader, more inclusive approach to public safety—one that encompasses a spectrum of services beyond traditional policing.
