Hacked Files Reveal New Allegations Against Matt Gaetz

 November 20, 2024

A high-stakes cybersecurity breach exposes sensitive documents related to former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz, who faces mounting scrutiny during his nomination process for U.S. Attorney General.

According to Daily Mail, a hacker using the alias Altam Beezley has accessed 23 exhibits containing damaging allegations against Gaetz, including sworn testimony from a woman claiming she had sexual relations with him when she was 17 years old.

The compromised files contain statements from two key witnesses who testified about alleged drug-fueled sex parties and payments for sexual favors. Joel Leppard, an attorney representing two alleged victims, claims Gaetz used his adopted son Nestor Galban's PayPal account to facilitate these transactions.

Testimony Details And Department Of Justice Response

The Department of Justice previously declined to press charges against Gaetz, citing concerns about witness credibility in a potential trial. The 42-year-old former congressman has consistently denied all allegations throughout the investigation.

Florida attorney Joel Leppard's client testified to the House Ethics Committee that she witnessed Gaetz engaging in sexual activity with a minor at a party in July 2017. According to the testimony, while Gaetz was initially unaware of the individual's age, he was later informed that she was underage.

Two women provided testimony stating they received payment from Gaetz for sexual encounters at various gatherings. These allegations have cast a shadow over his nomination process for the position of U.S. Attorney General.

Trump Administration Strategic Response

Despite the controversial allegations, President-elect Trump continues to advocate for Gaetz's confirmation. He has personally reached out to Republican senators to secure their support for the nomination.

Trump's allies are exploring alternative pathways to install Gaetz as head of the Justice Department, including the possibility of using the Federal Vacancies Reform Act. This strategy could potentially allow Gaetz to serve in an "acting" capacity for an extended period without Senate confirmation.

The confirmation process requires 51 Senate votes, presenting a significant challenge for Gaetz. Some officials expressed concern that confirmation hearings could become a distraction during the early months of Trump's second term.

Future Of The Nomination Process

The House Ethics Committee is considering whether to release their investigation report into Gaetz's alleged misconduct, even after his resignation from Congress. The report covers allegations of sexual relationships with minors, drug abuse, and other charges.

Gaetz, known for his pro-MAGA stance and loyalty to Trump, has previously called for criminal investigations of Trump critics, including Hillary Clinton and James Comey. He has also expressed intentions to restructure federal law enforcement agencies he would oversee as attorney general.

Senator Kevin Cramer offered insight into Trump's unwavering support, stating:

One thing about Donald Trump, people should never confuse his support for one of his nominees as a tactical or strategic tool for somebody else. And at least to this point, he's putting his own political capital behind it.

The Ongoing Investigation Developments

The cybersecurity breach has exposed new layers of complexity in Matt Gaetz's nomination for U.S. Attorney General. The hacked files, containing testimony from alleged victims and witnesses, have intensified scrutiny of his candidacy. The situation continues to evolve as Trump maintains his support for Gaetz while exploring alternative paths to secure his position in the Justice Department. The House Ethics Committee's pending decision on releasing their investigation report could significantly impact the nomination's trajectory.
