Phil Lesh, the esteemed bassist and co-founder of the legendary rock band Grateful Dead, has died at age 84.

Lesh's Musical Journey and Health Struggles Highlighted

Phil Lesh, born in 1940, met future bandmate Jerry Garcia in 1959. Garcia would eventually invite Lesh to join Grateful Dead in 1964, marking the beginning of a dynamic musical collaboration.

Originally trained in classical music and jazz, Garcia uniquely encouraged Lesh to take up the electric bass. The complexities of Bach's compositions largely shaped his approach to playing, setting a distinctive tone in the rock music scene.

Lesh's health issues were as public as his music career, having battled prostate and bladder cancer. In 1998, he underwent a liver transplant to address complications from hepatitis C and his past excessive drinking.
