Geane Herrera, Former Mixed Martial Arts Fighter, Passes Away At 33

 May 20, 2024

Geane Carlos Herrera, widely recognized in the fighting circuits as 'La Pulga,' has tragically died at the age of 33.

A motorcycle crash in Florida marked the untimely end for the ex-UFC fighter and BKFC contender, Fox News reported.

Following an illustrious career in mixed martial arts, with stints in both the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC), Herrera's passing was confirmed via a sad announcement on BKFC's social media platforms. The athlete was a notable figure in the combat sports arena, debuting in the UFC in August 2015.

A Life Cut Short, Remembered Fondly

Survived by his teenage son, a pregnant girlfriend, and other close family members, Herrera's sudden death has left his loved ones and fans in profound grief. A GoFundMe page has been set up to manage funeral expenses. This initiative highlights Herrera's legacy as an unwavering athlete and a cherished family man.

To honor his memory, the fundraiser page shares, "Geane was full of life, always trying to live life to the fullest." This sentiment echoes through each testimonial, portraying him as a man dedicated to his sport and loved ones.

From the fundraiser: Our family is devastated by the tragic loss of our beloved Geane Carlos Herrera, known in the professional fighting world as 'La Pulga', whose life was cut way too short at only 33 years old... Geane leaves behind a 16-year-old son, his 3-month pregnant girlfriend, mother, father, sisters, a brother, and a family that loves him and will deeply miss him.

After his time in the UFC, Herrera continued his career in the Absolute Championship Berkut in 2018 before making a striking entry into the BKFC in July 2021, where he clinched a win through a technical knockout against Abdiel Velazquez.

A Man of Many Roles

Herrera's family and friends recall him as an athlete and a vibrant beacon of hope and strength in his community. Born to an immigrant family from Colombia, he was motivated by the desire to uplift his community, bordering on nothing less than making his Colombian-American community proud.

The GoFundMe descriptions further reveal Herrera's hardworking ethos, stating he was a "hustler" who held various odd jobs to support his family's needs. These anecdotes depict a man whose drive extended far beyond the fighting ring.

"He was such a happy-go-lucky person that left a mark on everyone who came into his life," the fundraiser notes. It adds, "Geane was a hustler and started doing all kinds of odd jobs to make ends meet and ensure his kids and family were taken care of."

His fighting nickname, 'La Pulga,' which translates to 'The Flea,' might suggest an annoyance. In reality, it underpinned his ability to irritate and wear down opponents in the ring—apt for someone who stormed through life with tenacity and perseverance.

Community Impact Through Passion

Geane Herrera represented much more than his battle nicknames and fight records could capture. He was deeply invested in his personal growth and the well-being of those around him.

Whether through his daring maneuvers in the ring or his commitment to providing for his family, Herrera's life story remains one of inspiration and multifaceted success, as echoed by those he touched. The combat athlete, the community member, the family backbone — each role embraced with zeal.

Herrera's death, while a heavy loss to the communities he influenced, also serves as a solemn reminder of the whole yet fleeting nature of life. His quest to make a substantial impact, nurture his family, and support his community unites those mourning his untimely departure as they continue to celebrate his enduring legacy.
