Gavin Newsom at Napa Event as LA Protests Turn Violent

While Los Angeles burned under the chaos of anti-ICE protests, California Gov. Gavin Newsom was spotted sipping wine at a plush Napa Valley fundraiser.

According to the New York Post, on a recent afternoon, Newsom attended the “Vineyard Vibes” event at Odette Estate Winery in Napa Valley, raising funds for the PlumpJack Foundation, while over 400 miles away, violent demonstrations in downtown Los Angeles spiraled into destruction, prompting a National Guard deployment by President Trump.

The Napa event, hosted at a winery Newsom co-founded years ago, was a laid-back affair with live jazz, gourmet burgers, and fine wines described as “contemporary yet sophisticated.” Dressed in a casual V-neck and baseball cap, the governor mingled for at least 90 minutes, seemingly unfazed by the storm brewing elsewhere.

Fundraiser Glitz Amid State Turmoil

“I couldn’t believe it,” a source who snapped photos of Newsom remarked. Honestly, it’s hard to argue with that shock, while cities face unrest, a leader’s place isn’t at a wine-tasting, no matter how noble the cause.

The fundraiser supported the PlumpJack Foundation, established by Newsom’s sister, with a mission to tackle cancer prevention, education, and poverty cycles, per its website. A spokesperson noted Newsom “proudly attended” to honor his late mother, who passed from breast cancer. Admirable, sure, but timing matters, and this optics clash stings.

Promotional material hyped the event as “the perfect kick-off to summer fun.” Perfect for whom, exactly? Not for the Angelenos dodging Molotov cocktails while their governor savored the crushpad ambiance.

LA Descends into Violent Chaos

Meanwhile, on the same day, downtown Los Angeles erupted as anti-ICE protests turned ugly. Rioters, incensed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids targeting unauthorized migrants, hurled concrete rocks at police, torched vehicles, and defaced federal buildings with graffiti like “KILL ICE.”

The destruction wasn’t a small skirmish—Molotov cocktails flew at law enforcement, and vandalism spread like wildfire. It’s a stark reminder of how deeply divisive federal immigration policies remain, and how quickly tensions can ignite.

President Trump, unwilling to let the situation fester, ordered the National Guard into Los Angeles that evening, despite Newsom’s vocal objections. Newsom argued the move wasted resources and fanned the flames of conflict. Trump, however, stood firm, insisting order had to be restored.

Newsom and Trump Clash Again

This isn’t just a policy disagreement—it’s a legal showdown, with Newsom and Trump battling over who holds authority over National Guard troops in such crises. Newsom claims the deployment heightened tensions unnecessarily, while Trump doubles down on the need for decisive action. It’s a classic clash of state versus federal power, with Californians caught in the middle.

Critics have long pointed to Newsom’s knack for appearing disconnected during crises, and this isn’t the first time he’s faced such heat. Back in November 2020, he was photographed maskless at a lavish dinner party for 12, despite urging Californians to avoid socializing amid COVID-19 restrictions. That misstep still lingers in public memory as a symbol of “rules for thee, not for me.”

Newsom later apologized for that 2020 incident, admitting he failed to model proper behavior. Fair enough, but apologies don’t erase patterns, and showing up to a winery bash while LA burns doesn’t exactly scream “I’ve learned my lesson.”

Optics Matter in Leadership Roles

Let’s be clear: No one disputes the value of charity events or personal tributes like the one Newsom attended in memory of his mother. But leadership demands presence—both physical and symbolic—especially when a state faces dual crises of violence and division.

The contrast between Napa’s serene “Vineyard Vibes” and LA’s scorched streets couldn’t be sharper, and it fuels a narrative of elitism that conservatives have long pinned on progressive leaders. Newsom’s casual wine-sipping moment, while not inherently wrong, risks alienating those who expect a governor to prioritize a state in distress over a personal cause, however heartfelt.
